Animals must be protected, plain and simple, and it's up to people to make sure they are. Though animals are given defense mechanisms to fight off their peers and predators in nature, they're not equipped to deal with the worst of the human race.

-- Ellen M. Bleja, 50, of 981 Route 162, Sprakers, was charged Jan. 15 with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration. Police stopped Bleja after a license plate check on Route 30. Bleja was issued a ticket and scheduled to appear in city court at a later date.
