Canajoharie

April 13, 20, 27 and May 4, 11 and 18, 1 p.m. — The Canajoharie Library will offer a six part Memoir Writing Workshop throughout April and May. This series of six free workshops is on memoir and personal writing in various forms. Marea Gordett, poet and non-fiction writer, will present the one and a half hour sessions which are open to the public. Space is limited to 18 participants. No writing experience is necessary, but individuals are encouraged to sign up early to ensure a spot. To register you may stop in, call or send the library a Facebook message with your name, phone and email. There is no fee to register for this class. Arkell Center

Daily activities taking place at Arkell Center during the month of April 2012 will be as follows:

Monday through Friday — Noon meals are provided by the Meals of Montgomery Program (M.O.M.). Reservations are required by noon of the previous day. Call (518) 673-5048. No meals will be served through the week of April 2-6 at Cafe Arkell. Normal meal schedule will resume at 12 Noon on Monday, April 9.

Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.- 12 Noon — Winter Indoor Walking Program will continue.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10:15-11 a.m. — Senior’s Exercise Program, with Bob Smith, will take place.

Wednesday, 3:00-4:00 p.m. — Gentle Yoga for seniors will be held with instructor, Sylvia Wolhgemuth.

First Three Thursdays of the month, 2-4 p.m. — Second Time Around Big Band practice will be held.

Special Events

April 13, 1:30 p.m. — “You’ve Earned a Say” social security and medicare discussion will be held directly following the senior citizens meeting. All seniors are encouraged to attend.

April 16, 6:45 p.m. — The Del Nero Singers Musical Program for all ages will take place, free of charge.

April 18, 6-8 p.m. — St. Mary’s Healthcare Diabetes and Nutrition Program will take place. Free to all. Call (518) 841-3717 to register. Walk-ins are welcome also.

April 24, 9:30 a.m. — Breakfast with the seniors will take place in the Community Center. All area seniors are invited to join in.

April 24, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. — A blood pressure clinic will be held by Home Health Care Partners, co-sponsored by St. Mary’s Hospital and Nathan Littauer Hospital. In addition to conducting the blood pressure clinic, the Home Health Care Partners Corp. will also provide health and wellness information.

April 25, 12:45 p.m. — A public card party will be held. Donation is $2 with prizes and refreshments.

April 26, 2-3 p.m. — Karen Britt from Alzheimer’s Association will join the monthly meeting for a question and answer session. All senior citizens and caregivers are invited to attend.

April 27, 1:30 p.m. — Canajoharie Sr. Citizens Club invited the Ayres Animal Shelter to come and share and bring a few fuzzy friends to meet the seniors.

Fort Plain

April 21, 9 a.m.-Noon — A rabies vaccination clinic will be held at the Palatine Town Barn located on Stone Arabia Rd. in Fort Plain for dogs, cats and ferrets. Pet owners should bring proof of their pet’s last rabies vaccination. This helps the veterinarian determine whether the pet will receive a one or three year vaccination. Without it your pet will receive a one year vaccination only. To assure the safety of other pets and people, dogs must be leashed. Cats and ferrets must be contained in a pet carrier or box when attending the rabies clinic. Veterinarian administration fee is $10 per rabies vaccine. Distemper shots will be available at an additional fee. For more information about rabies contact Montgomery County Public Health at (518) 853-3531.

April 25, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. — The Bassett Mobile Coach will be at the Fort Plain Save-a-Lot. The Cancer Services Program of Fulton and Montgomery Counties is offering free cancer screenings to men 50 and older and women 40 and older who do not have health insurance. Screenings may include mammograms, breast and pelvic exams, pap tests for women 40 plus, and colorectal cancer screening kits for men and women 50 plus.

April 29 — The first of the Mohawk Valley Schooling Horse Show Series will be held at the Great Vista Farm located on 556 Paris Rd. in Fort Plain. This one-day show will feature beginners through advanced classes with Walk-Trot through three ft. jumpers. Entry fee is $15 a class. Stabling is available. Weekly Events

Mondays, 7-8 p.m. — AA meeting will be held at the Fort Plain Senior Center. Call (518) 993-2031 for details.

Mondays, 7-8:30 p.m. — Fort Plain’s Mayor Guy Barton will hold a weekly “Meet With The Mayor” session at the Village Hall, 168 Canal St. During the weekly gathering, which members of the public are encouraged to attend, Mayor Barton will discuss the future of Fort Plain. He will also answer questions pertaining to the village.

Tuesdays, 10-11 a.m. — The Lotus Center for Wellness and Self Care will be offering yoga sessions at 9 Center St. Call 993-9904 for more information. The center is open Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Every other Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. — The Fort Plain Senior Center holds a pinochle tournament with prizes, sandwiches, cake and ice cream. For those of you who do not know the game of pinochle, come in any week day morning and lessons will be available. More players are always welcome. The game is easy and fun. 2nd Thursday of each month the Fort Plain Community Activity Council will meet at the Village Hall at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Fort Plain Village Planning Board will hold its regular meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

April 14, 9-11 a.m. — A free clothing giveaway will be taking place at Valley Alliance Church, State Highway 5, east of Nelliston. Doors open at 8:45 a.m. Refreshments will be provided.

Second Mondays, 7 p.m. — Nelliston Activities Council meeting at village office. All welcome.

St. Johnsville

April 15, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. — The Margaret Reaney Memorial Library will hold Flapjacks and Fairytales, a pancake breakfast and theme basket raffle to benefit the MRML. Flapjacks and Fairytales will be held at the H.C. Smith Benefit Club. Breakfast will be served beginning at 8 a.m., and includes pancakes, eggs, home fries, sausage, sausage gravy, applesauce and beverages. As has become tradition, the breakfast will also feature homemade Mary Finch biscuits, real butter and real maple syrup. April 25, 2 p.m. — Karen Britt, Western Regional Program Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York, will be speaking at the Resident Council meeting at St. Johnsville Rehab and Nursing Center located at 7 Timmerman Ave. The program will be held in the Activities Room. Her topic will be “Memory Loss” as it presents in those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The community is invited to this event. Refreshments will be served.
