Canajoharie

April 26, 27 and 28, 7 p.m. — The tenth installment of Valley Voices, the popular local production featuring three student-written, directed and acted plays will be held at the Arkell Performing Arts Center at the Canajoharie High School from Thursday, April 26 through Saturday, April 28, with three shows held nightly at 7 p.m. The comedy, “The (Mostly) Tornado Hour”, is written and directed by Jenna Sierra. “Kaya” was written by Stephanie Terwilliger, and directed by Matthew Soto. “Relief” was written by Billy Winsman, and directed by Sarah Ells. “Valley Voices X” marks one decade since the debut of the series in 2002. Admission each night, at the door, is $5. A free ticket may also be obtained by contacting a cast member or visiting Canajoharie McDonald’s.

April 27, 1 p.m. — The Canajoharie Senior Citizens will meet at Arkell Center. Following the meeting, the Ayres Animal Shelter will be on hand with some of the animals to present a program. All are invited to attend. Anyone who wishes to bring a “gift” for the animals such as cat or dog food, dish detergent or 30 gallon garbage bags, may do so.

April 27, 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. — Canajoharie AYSO is holding a fundraiser featuring the band Chalkdust Torture at the Moose Lodge in Canajoharie. The cost is $10 per person and food/snacks will be provided.

April 28, 7 p.m. — The Terry Gordon Quintet will present a concert at the Arkell Museum and Canajoharie Library, 2 Erie Blvd. The performance, a part of the Canajoharie Concert Series, is funded, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts. Tickets for the performance are $7 for adults and $3.50 for children 10-17 by advance sale, are available by calling the Arkell Museum at Canajoharie at (518) 673-2314. Tickets at the door will be $8 for adults and $4 for children.

April 29, Noon to 4 p.m. — The VanAlstyne Homestead will host a Bridal Show. The event will feature vendors, music, food, photography and more. $5 admission enters you in a raffle. Also, the museum room will feature a display of antique bridal dresses and memorabilia. For more information, call Phyllis at (518) 596-4929. The VanAlstyne Homestead is located at 4 Moyer Street.

May 5, 10 a.m. — The Canajoharie All-Alumni Association will hold it’s sixth “Drums Along the Mohawk” reunion of CHS alumni and friends at the Canajoharie High School located at 1 Scholastic Way. At noon a catered luncheon will be served. The cost is $10 per person. Reservations for the luncheon should be received by April 20. May 15, 4-9 p.m. — A driver education pre-licensing course will be held at the Canajoharie High School. Pre-registration is required by sending a check or money order payable to Canajoharie Central School, c/o Pat Van Heusen, Canajoharie Central School, 136 Scholastic Way, Canajoharie, NY 13317. This course fulfills the New York State law requiring proof of satisfactory completion of five hours of classroom driver training and highway safety instruction prior to the issuing of a license. All persons enrolled must bring their learner’s permit. The fee for the course is $20.

Arkell Center

Daily activities taking place at Arkell Center during the month of April 2012 will be as follows:

Monday through Friday — Noon meals are provided by the Meals of Montgomery Program (M.O.M.). Reservations are required by noon of the previous day. Call (518) 673-5048. No meals will be served through the week of April 2-6 at Cafe Arkell. Normal meal schedule will resume at 12 Noon on Monday, April 9.

Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.- 12 Noon — Winter Indoor Walking Program will continue.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10:15-11 a.m. — Senior’s Exercise Program, with Bob Smith, will take place.

Wednesday, 3:00-4:00 p.m. — Gentle Yoga for seniors will be held with instructor, Sylvia Wolhgemuth.

First Three Thursdays of the month, 2-4 p.m. — Second Time Around Big Band practice will be held.

• Special Events

April 26, 2-3 p.m. — Karen Britt from Alzheimer’s Association will join the monthly meeting for a question and answer session. All senior citizens and caregivers are invited to attend.

April 27, 1:30 p.m. — Canajoharie Sr. Citizens Club invited the Ayres Animal Shelter to come and share and bring a few fuzzy friends to meet the seniors.

May 5, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. — Defensive Driving Class will be held. Call (518) 673-4408 for more information.

Fort Plain

April 27-28, 9 a.m. — A spring rummage sale will take place at the Fort Plain United Methodist Church located on 39 Center St. The hours on Friday, April 27 will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Each day there will be $1 bag sale on all clothing. April 29 — The first of the Mohawk Valley Schooling Horse Show Series will be held at the Great Vista Farm located on 556 Paris Rd. in Fort Plain. This one-day show will feature beginners through advanced classes with Walk-Trot through three feet jumpers. Entry fee is $15 a class. Stabling is available. Weekly Events

Mondays, 7-8 p.m. — AA meeting will be held at the Fort Plain Senior Center. Call (518) 993-2031 for details.

Mondays, 7-8:30 p.m. — Fort Plain’s Mayor Guy Barton will hold a weekly “Meet With The Mayor” session at the Village Hall, 168 Canal St. During the weekly gathering, which members of the public are encouraged to attend, Mayor Barton will discuss the future of Fort Plain. He will also answer questions pertaining to the village.

Tuesdays, 10-11 a.m. — The Lotus Center for Wellness and Self Care will be offering yoga sessions at 9 Center St. Call 993-9904 for more information. The center is open Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. — The Lotus Center for Wellness and Self Care will be offering aerobic classes at 9 Center St. Call (518) 993-9904 for more information.

Every other Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. — The Fort Plain Senior Center holds a pinochle tournament with prizes, sandwiches, cake and ice cream. For those of you who do not know the game of pinochle, come in any week day morning and lessons will be available. More players are always welcome. The game is easy and fun. 2nd Thursday of each month the Fort Plain Community Activity Council will meet at the Village Hall at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Every Monday Thursday and Friday is baked goods, Fort Plain Fulmont Community Action Agency, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Please bring your own bags. People may sign up for Child Health Plus with Vicki Morgan every other Friday at the center by appointment only. Please call Vicki at 773-5419 for an appointment.

The Fort Plain Village Planning Board will hold its regular meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

St. Johnsville

May 5, 2 p.m. — The historic Nellis Tavern museum, east of St. Johnsville, will present performer and researcher Dave Ruch in a special concert entitled “The War of 1812: Songs and Stories from New York and Beyond.” With guitar, mandolin, banjo, jaw harp, bones and voice, Dave Ruch interprets the traditional and historical music of the New York State region. For this program, Ruch presents a ringing portrait of the “War of 1812”, through the songs and stories of the people themselves.

May 12 — Spring Fest will be held and the St. Johnsville Chamber of Commerce will feature a history tent during the fest. The tent will be located on West Main St., near the stoplight, in the Robert Failing parking lot. A wealth of information can be found in the St. Johnsville Chamber of Commerce Big Top tent.
