Canajoharie

Aug. 14, 7 p.m. — The Redneck Rodeo Cowboy Band will play Music on Mainstreet. Originally founded in 1981, when cowboy hats were king, they have reunited with all five original members to entertain you with their own brand of down home classic country rock and modern country music. All Music on Mainstreet shows are free. This is the final show for the 2012 season. The rain venue will be the Canajoharie High School’s Arkell Auditorium.

Aug 17, 6 p.m. — The Canajoharie Community Youth Center will hold a fundraising Boiling Pot 5K. This is the first of what the center hopes to make an annual event, featuring a 5K run/walk and a free Kids Fun Run. The event will also feature music and food. It is open to all age groups, with awards provided to the top male and female finisher in each age group. T-shirts will be provided to the first 75 registrants. The Kids Fun Run will follow the 5K, with the first 60 registrants receiving a free t-shirt. Refreshments provided after the race at the youth center. Volunteers will be needed for this event, and donations are being accepted. Noon-4 p.m. (Saturday only) — The Van Alstyne Museum and Homestead, located at 4 Moyer St., is now open

Arkell Center

Daily activities taking place at Arkell Center during the month of August 2012 will be as follows:

Monday through Friday — Noon meals are provided by the Meals of Montgomery Program (M.O.M.). Reservations are required by noon of the previous day. Call (518) 673-2000 or (518) 843-2300. Suggested donation is $3 for those 60 years of age or older.

Wednesday, 3-4 p.m. — Gentle Yoga for seniors will be held with instructor, Patty Pietrowicz.

Aug. 9 and 16, 2-4 p.m. — Second Time Around Big Band practice will be held.

• Special Events

Aug. 20 and 22, 1-4 p.m. — Defensive Driving Class, sponsored by the Shults Agency, will be held. Call (518) 673-4408 and reserve a seat.

Aug. 24, 12:30 p.m. — A Senior Citizens Club picnic at Arkell Center will take place. Club members are all welcome and may bring a dish to share.

Aug. 28, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. — A blood pressure clinic will be held with Home Health Care Partners Corp., co-sponsored by St. Mary’s Hospital and Nathan Littauer Hospital. In addition to conducting the blood pressure clinic, the Home Health Care Partners Corp. also provides health and wellness information.

Aug. 29, 12:45 p.m. — A public card party will be held. Donation is $2 with prizes and refreshments.

Sept. 17 and 19, 5:30-8:30 p.m. — Defensive Driving Class, sponsored by the Shults Agency, will be held. Call (518) 673-4408 and reserve a seat.

• Meetings

Aug. 10, 1 p.m. — Canajoharie Sr. Citizens Club meeting will take place.

Aug. 14, 6 p.m. — Canajoharie/Palatine Chamber of Commerce will meet. The public is invited to attend.

Aug. 23, 2-3 p.m. — Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Support Group meeting will take place with Lisa Hubbard. This service is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York.

Fort Plain

Aug. 9, 7 p.m. — The Fox Creek Band will play their own blend of country and bluegrass tunes in Haslett Park. Refreshments will be provided by the Fort Plain Methodist Church. Admission is free.

Weekly Events

Mondays, 7-8 p.m. — AA meeting will be held at the Fort Plain Senior Center. Call (518) 993-2031 for details.

Mondays, 7-8:30 p.m. — Fort Plain’s Mayor Guy Barton will hold a weekly “Meet With The Mayor” session at the Village Hall, 168 Canal St. During the weekly gathering, which members of the public are encouraged to attend, Mayor Barton will discuss the future of Fort Plain. He will also answer questions pertaining to the village.

Tuesdays, 10-11 a.m. — The Lotus Center for Wellness and Self Care will be offering yoga sessions at 9 Center St. Call (518) 993-9904 for more information. The center is open Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m. — The Lotus Center for Wellness and Self Care will be offering aerobic classes at 9 Center St. Call (518) 993-9904 for more information.

Tuesdays — The Fort Plain Senior Center will hold a Pitch Tournament. For more details call (518) 993-3432.

Tuesdays — AA group will once again be meeting at The Reformed Church in the Fellowship Hall at 7 p.m.

Every other Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. — The Fort Plain Senior Center holds a pinochle tournament with prizes, sandwiches, cake and ice cream. For those of you who do not know the game of pinochle, come in any week day morning and lessons will be available. More players are always welcome. The game is easy and fun. 2nd Thursday of each month the Fort Plain Community Activity Council will meet at the Village Hall at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

3rd Wednesday of each month the Fort Plain Autism Support Group will meet at the Fort Plain United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. For more information call (518) 993-4353.

Every Monday Thursday and Friday is baked goods, Fort Plain Fulmont Community Action Agency, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Please bring your own bags. People may sign up for Child Health Plus with Vicki Morgan every other Friday at the center by appointment only. Please call Vicki at 773-5419 for an appointment.

The Fort Plain Village Planning Board will hold its regular meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

Saturdays, 10-11 a.m. — Preschool Story Hours at the Fort Plain Library. No registration is required for this free, drop-in event. For further information, please call the Fort Plain Free Library at (518) 993-4646 during regular library hours.

Saturdays/Sundays, 5 p.m. — Manna Meals served free of charge at Reformed Church, 165 Canal St. All welcome.

Saturdays — The Fort Plain Senior Center will hold art classes. The instructor will be A. Williams. Call (518) 993-3432 to sign up.

Nelliston

Aug. 11 — The Canajoharie-Fort Plain Elks Lodge 2621 will sponsor Summerfest 2012. The family event will feature kids games and prizes, raffles, a bouncy bounce house, dunking booth, face painting, and a horseshoe tournament.

DJ services during the day will be provided by Walt Maaser, and evening entertainment will be provided by JL Fog, starting at 7 p.m.. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be available during the day, with a catered chicken and roast beef dinner beginning at 4 p.m. Soda and adult beverages will be available.

A classic car and struck show will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring food and beverages and a People’s Choice award.

The event, held at the lodge, Old Station Road, Nelliston, will be sponsored by Howard Mosher, Jr. Contracting. The proceeds earned will benefit numerous charities. With questions, call (518) 993-2621.

St. Johnsville

Aug. 10, 7 p.m. — Harpist Elizabeth Meriwether Huntley will perform at the St. Johnsville Community House, Washington St. The program is sponsored by the Margaret Reaney Memorial Library. The St. Johnsville program, free to the public, is suitable for all ages. Anyone desiring further information is invited to contact the library at (518) 568-7822.

Aug. 11, 6-8:30 — The annual fresh peach ice cream social and bake sale will be held at the St. Johnsville Marina. Walt “The Man” Brown will provide music and karaoke. Sweet, seasonal local peaches, will be made into a homemade old fashioned topping on Schwan’s gourmet ice cream. This event is sponsored by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and supported by Schwan’s Ice Cream, in hopes of the community getting together to help George Haines. For any questions contact Rev. Aug. 13, 6:30-8:30 p.m. — The village of St. Johnsville band concert series for this season are free to the public and will be held at the St. Johnsville Marina. Refreshments will be sold by local organizations. These concerts are sponsored by the village and town of St. Johnsville and are funded in part by the Fulton-Montgomery Arts Grant part of the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by Saratoga Arts.

Aug. 18, 10-11:30 a.m. — Margaret Reaney Memorial Library, 19 Kingsbury Avenue, will host Science at the Library. School age children and their families are invited to drop in anytime between 10 and 11:30 a.m.

Presented in a science fair format, GE volunteer scientists direct hands-on experiments in energy, surface tension, buoyancy, sound, light, electricity, magnetism and chemistry. Stations will be set up throughout a library with GE volunteers positioned at each station to assist with the activities. Instructions are provided so children and their families can proceed at their own pace. Science at the Library is free, however, for planning purposes please call the library at (518) 568-7822 if you plan to attend.
