Canajoharie

Aug 17, 6 p.m.  —  The Canajoharie Community Youth Center will hold a fundraising Boiling Pot 5K. This is the first of what the center hopes to make an annual event, featuring a 5K run/walk and a free Kids Fun Run. The event will also feature music and food. It is open to all age groups, with awards provided to the top male and female finisher in each age group. T-shirts will be provided to the first 75 registrants. The Kids Fun Run will follow the 5K, with the first 60 registrants receiving a free t-shirt. Refreshments provided after the race at the youth center. Volunteers will be needed for this event, and donations are being accepted. Noon-4 p.m. (Saturday only)  —  The Van Alstyne Museum and Homestead, located at 4 Moyer St., is now open

Arkell Center

Daily activities taking place at Arkell Center during the month of August 2012 will be as follows:

Monday through Friday  —  Noon meals are provided by the Meals of Montgomery Program (M.O.M.). Reservations are required by noon of the previous day. Call (518) 673-2000 or (518) 843-2300. Suggested donation is $3 for those 60 years of age or older.

Wednesday, 3-4 p.m.  —  Gentle Yoga for seniors will be held with instructor, Patty Pietrowicz.

Aug. 16, 2-4 p.m.  —  Second Time Around Big Band practice will be held.

• Special Events

Aug. 20 and 22, 1-4 p.m.  —  Defensive Driving Class, sponsored by the Shults Agency, will be held. Call (518) 673-4408 and reserve a seat.

Aug. 24, 12:30 p.m.  —  A Senior Citizens Club picnic at Arkell Center will take place. Club members are all welcome and may bring a dish to share.

Aug. 28, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.  —  A blood pressure clinic will be held with Home Health Care Partners Corp., co-sponsored by St. Mary’s Hospital and Nathan Littauer Hospital. In addition to conducting the blood pressure clinic, the Home Health Care Partners Corp. also provides health and wellness information.

Aug. 29, 12:45 p.m.  —  A public card party will be held. Donation is $2 with prizes and refreshments.

Sept. 17 and 19, 5:30-8:30 p.m.  —  Defensive Driving Class, sponsored by the Shults Agency, will be held. Call (518) 673-4408 and reserve a seat.

• Meetings

Aug. 23, 2-3 p.m.  —  Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Support Group meeting will take place with Lisa Hubbard. This service is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York.

Fort Plain

Aug. 18, 11 a.m.  —  The AMVETS POST 2000 Fort Plain will host its first Veterans Benefit Day. The day’s events start with a free motorcycle run leaving the Post at 11 a.m. The run will stop at various veterans’ posts.

Fun events for the entire family will get under way at 2 p.m. This includes games for children, horseshoes, a bake sale, gas card raffle, 50/50 raffles and a Chinese auction. The main event will be a roast beef dinner at 5 p.m. Tickets for the dinner will be $10, or $8 if you bring a dish to pass. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Albany Housing Coalition, Inc., a transitional residence for male homeless veterans, and the Guardian House in Saratoga Springs, a female homeless veterans residence. Aug. 22, 7 p.m.  —  The band Tongue and Groove will be playing in Haslett Park to make up for a cancelled summer concert. The event is free of charge.

Aug. 23, 7 p.m.  —  The Dependents will play the final village of Fort Plain, Haslett Park, summer concert. The event is free of charge.

Sept. 22, 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m.  —  The first of what the Arts Factory hopes to make an annual sidewalk chalk drawing event will be held at Haslett Park. The Arts Factory is looking for artists of all ages and skill levels to participate. Chalk will be provided, although artists are invited to bring their own if they desire. Mondays, 7-8 p.m.  —  AA meeting will be held at the Fort Plain Senior Center. Call (518) 993-2031 for details.

Mondays, 7-8:30 p.m.  —  Fort Plain’s Mayor Guy Barton will hold a weekly “Meet With The Mayor” session at the Village Hall, 168 Canal St. During the weekly gathering, which members of the public are encouraged to attend, Mayor Barton will discuss the future of Fort Plain. He will also answer questions pertaining to the village.

Tuesdays, 10-11 a.m.  —  The Lotus Center for Wellness and Self Care will be offering yoga sessions at 9 Center St. Call (518) 993-9904 for more information. The center is open Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m.  —  The Lotus Center for Wellness and Self Care will be offering aerobic classes at 9 Center St. Call (518) 993-9904 for more information.

Tuesdays  —  AA group will once again be meeting at The Reformed Church in the Fellowship Hall at 7 p.m.

Every other Wednesday, 1:30 p.m.  —  The Fort Plain Senior Center holds a pinochle tournament with prizes, sandwiches, cake and ice cream. For those of you who do not know the game of pinochle, come in any week day morning and lessons will be available. More players are always welcome. The game is easy and fun. 2nd Thursday of each month the Fort Plain Community Activity Council will meet at the Village Hall at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

3rd Wednesday of each month the Fort Plain Autism Support Group will meet at the Fort Plain United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. For more information call (518) 993-4353.

Every Monday Thursday and Friday is baked goods, Fort Plain Fulmont Community Action Agency, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Please bring your own bags. People may sign up for Child Health Plus with Vicki Morgan every other Friday at the center by appointment only. Please call Vicki at 773-5419 for an appointment.

The Fort Plain Village Planning Board will hold its regular meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

Saturdays, 10-11 a.m.  —  Preschool Story Hours at the Fort Plain Library. No registration is required for this free, drop-in event. For further information, please call the Fort Plain Free Library at (518) 993-4646 during regular library hours.

Saturdays/Sundays, 5 p.m.  —  Manna Meals served free of charge at Reformed Church, 165 Canal St. All welcome.

Nelliston

St. Johnsville

Aug. 18, 10-11:30 a.m.  —  Margaret Reaney Memorial Library, 19 Kingsbury Avenue, will host Science at the Library. School age children and their families are invited to drop in anytime between 10 and 11:30 a.m.

Presented in a science fair format, GE volunteer scientists direct hands-on experiments in energy, surface tension, buoyancy, sound, light, electricity, magnetism and chemistry. Stations will be set up throughout a library with GE volunteers positioned at each station to assist with the activities. Instructions are provided so children and their families can proceed at their own pace. Science at the Library is free, however, for planning purposes please call the library at (518) 568-7822 if you plan to attend.

Aug. 20-25  —  The St. Johnsville Fireman’s Fair will be held in Soldiers and Sailors Park. Each day will feature special events and attractions.

Monday, Aug. 20, is Bike Night, where attendees are invited to bring their bike to show off. Also featured will be a chicken wing special at the food booth.

Tuesday, Aug. 21, is Fire, EMS and Law Enforcement night. Numerous departments, including local ones, will set up displays and demonstrations, showing off their trucks and equipment. Participating agencies will arrive after 5 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 22, will feature FLAME in concert. The band will perform in front of the grandstand. The evening will also offer a “Buddy Night” ride discount.

Thursday, Aug. 23, is wristband night, where rides may be accessed through the purchase of a wristband.

Friday, Aug. 24, is the first night to feature an impressive fireworks display, which will begin at 10 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 25, the fair will open at 2 p.m. with a wristband special available until 6 p.m. The evening’s grand finale fireworks will kick off at 10 p.m.

The food booth will be open daily from 11 p.m. to 1 p.m., and for dinner beginning at 5 p.m.

Advance ride tickets can be purchased at Curly’s Video, St. Johnsville. Advance wristbands are also available for purchase.

Sept. 8 and 9, 10 a.m.  —  A craft fair will be held at Fort Klock. Hours on Saturday will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Over 100 talented artisans and crafters will offer their hand made creations. Food will be available. Free admission to the craft fair along with free parking. Sometimes problems arise with scheduled events. Call Fort Klock at (518) 568-7779 to confirm dates.
