Canajoharie

Sept. 8, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. — The Canajoharie High School Band will hold a car wash, bake sale, bottle drive and chicken barbecue at Ace hardware, Dutchtown Plaza, Palatine Bridge. The car wash, bake sale, and bottle drive will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, and the chicken barbecue from 1 to 5 p.m. All proceeds will support the Canajoharie High School Band Trip to Disney World, Florida, for Music in the Parks 2013.

Sept. 14, 5 p.m. — The Canajoharie High School Class of 1967 would like to invite all interested classmates and their guests to a “Meet and Greet” night at the Canajoharie Country Club. This is an additional opportunity for those attending the Class of ‘67 reunion on Sept. 15, as well as those who are unable to attend. With questions, call Mick Spencer, (518) 673-3186.

Sept. 22, 1-5 p.m. — The 2012 Artists’ Studios Tour, sponsored by the Arts Factory of Montgomery County (TAFMC), will take place. Ten outstanding artists from western Montgomery County have agreed to give the public a rare glimpse into their working environments, techniques of mastery and recent works.

Featured artists are: Joanne C. Resch, a watercolorist in Fort Plain; MaryAnn Nellis, a potter in Canajoharie; Robert E. Smith, a fortepiano maker, restorer and furniture maker in St. Johnsville; Terry Potoczny, a Minden photographer; Jan Skidmore, a multi-media artist in Fort Plain; Chris Duncan, a sculptor in Canajoharie; Alice Smith Duncan, a gilder and frame restorer in Canajoharie; Matthew Hopkins, a painter in Ames; Michael McCarthy, a blacksmith located in Ames; and Jasmine Crowe, a potter in the Sprout Brook area.

Tickets for the Artists’ Studios tour are $10 and may be purchased at the Fort Plain Free Library, the Margaret Reaney Memorial Library in St. Johnsville and at the Canajoharie Library from Sept. 8 through the afternoon of Sept. 22.

Weekly Events

Noon-4 p.m. (Saturday only) — The Van Alstyne Museum and Homestead, located at 4 Moyer St., is now open.

Arkell Center

Daily activities taking place at Arkell Center during the month of September 2012 will be:

Monday through Friday — Noon meals are provided by the Meals of Montgomery Program (M.O.M.). Reservations are required by noon of the previous day. Call (518) 673-2000 or (518) 843-2300. Suggested donation is $3 for those 60 years of age or older.

Wednesday, 3:00-4:00 p.m. — Gentle Yoga for seniors will be held, with instructor, Gloria W. or Patty P.

Thursday, Sept. 6 & 27, 2-4 p.m. — Second Time Around Big Band practice will be held.

Sept. 7, 1 p.m. — Canajoharie Sr. Citizens Club meeting and program of Gentle Yoga will be held with Sylvia Wohlgemuth.

Sept. 10, 11 a.m. — Performance by Gary Van Slyke with Labor Day songs. All seniors welcome.

Sept. 12 and 26, 12:45 p.m. — A public card party will be held. Donation is $2 with prizes.

Sept. 17 and 19, 5:30-8:30 p.m. — Defensive Driving Class, sponsored by the Shults Agency, will be held. Call (518) 673-4408 and reserve a seat.

Sept. 19, 1 p.m. — “Terra Cotta Warriers from China”, a DVD presentation and visuals, will take place by Bonnie Kerr.

Sept. 25, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. — A blood pressure clinic will be held with Home Health Care Partners Corp., co-sponsored by St. Mary’s Hospital and Nathan Littauer Hospital. In addition to conducting the blood pressure clinic, Home Health Care Partners Corp., also provides health and wellness information.

Sept. 28, 1 p.m. — A senior citizens club meeting will take place. Following the meeting at 1:30 p.m., the Attorney General’s Office, will present a program on Identity Theft. Plan on attending.

Sept. 7 and 28, 1 p.m. — The Canajoharie Senior Citizens meeting will be held, with programs, to follow.

Sept. 11, 6 p.m. — The Canajoharie/Palatine Chamber of Commerce meeting will be open to the public.

Sept. 27, 2-3 p.m. — The Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Support Group meeting will be held with Lisa Hubbard.

• Special Trips

Sept. 12, 8 a.m. — A mystery trip will take place. Cost is $44 for members and $49 for non-members. Returning at 6:30 p.m. Contact Dorothy Frazier for more at (518) 673-5588.

Fort Plain

Sept. 15 and 16 —  Church Block Party will be held September 15 and 16 at Wiles Park. On Saturday, the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. A welcome will be provided at noon, and speakers and bands will perform until 9 p.m. Featured will be headliner Derek Joseph and Isaiah6, playing from 7:30-9 p.m., and offering worship and closing message. Saturday will also feature Frankie’s Barbecue chicken, at $7 a ticket.

On Sunday, the day will open at 10:30 a.m. with an opening prayer call to worship. Various local ministries will partake in 4 ever 1: Sunday Morning Worship, which will be followed by a potluck picnic.

Sept. 22, 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. — The first of what the Arts Factory hopes to make an annual sidewalk chalk drawing event will be held at Haslett Park. The Arts Factory is looking for artists of all ages and skill levels to participate. Chalk will be provided, although artists are invited to bring their own if they desire. Sept. 23, 2 p.m. — The Fort Plain Library will host the second discussion on the award winning novel “The Book Thief” by Mark Zusak. The discussion will be facilitated by the poet and author Mary Cuffe Perez. No registration is necessary. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk.

Weekly Events

Mondays, 7-8 p.m. — AA meeting will be held at the Fort Plain Senior Center. Call (518) 993-2031 for details.

Mondays, 7-8:30 p.m. — Fort Plain’s Mayor Guy Barton will hold a weekly “Meet With The Mayor” session at the Village Hall, 168 Canal St. During the weekly gathering, which members of the public are encouraged to attend, Mayor Barton will discuss the future of Fort Plain. He will also answer questions pertaining to the village.

Tuesdays, 10-11 a.m. — The Lotus Center for Wellness and Self Care will be offering yoga sessions at 9 Center St. Call (518) 993-9904 for more information. The center is open Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Every other Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. — The Fort Plain Senior Center holds a pinochle tournament with prizes, sandwiches, cake and ice cream. For those of you who do not know the game of pinochle, come in any week day morning and lessons will be available. More players are always welcome. The game is easy and fun. 2nd Thursday of each month the Fort Plain Community Activity Council will meet at the Village Hall at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Every Monday Thursday and Friday is baked goods, Fort Plain Fulmont Community Action Agency, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Please bring your own bags. People may sign up for Child Health Plus with Vicki Morgan every other Friday at the center by appointment only. Please call Vicki at 773-5419 for an appointment.

The Fort Plain Village Planning Board will hold its regular meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

Saturdays, 10-11 a.m. — Preschool Story Hours at the Fort Plain Library. No registration is required for this free, drop-in event. For further information, please call the Fort Plain Free Library at (518) 993-4646 during regular library hours.

Saturdays/Sundays, 5 p.m. — Manna Meals served free of charge at Reformed Church, 165 Canal St. All welcome.

Marshville

Sept. 6, 3:30-6:30 p.m. — The Marshville Evangelical Church, Route 10 South, will hold a chicken barbecue. Cost for take-out only is $6 per half chicken. St. Johnsville

Sept. 8 and 9, 10 a.m. — A craft fair will be held at Fort Klock. Hours on Saturday will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Over 100 talented artisans and crafters will offer their hand made creations. Food will be available. Free admission to the craft fair along with free parking.

Sept. 10, 6 p.m. — A St. Johnsville Community Policing Initiative meeting will be held at the St. Johnsville Community House, 16 Washington St.

Sept. 19, 10 a.m. — Nifty Needles will resume at Margaret Reaney Memorial Library located in St. Johnsville. The group is open to anyone who enjoys working on handcrafts including sewers, knitters and quilters. All are welcome to gather around the table. Nifty Needles will continue to meet the first and third Wednesday of each month throughout the fall, winter and spring. Sept. 29 — A colonial barn dance will be held at Fort Klock. Attendees are encouraged to wear period clothing, or, come as you are. There will be colonial music, callers and refreshments. For more information call Fort Klock at (518) 568-7779.

Oct. 11, 6:30 p.m. — Morris J. Edwards American Legion Post #168, St. Johnsville, will be holding their next regular meeting. Legion members should note the new start time. There will not be a September meeting. For more, call Anthony Susi, commander, at (518) 568-3464.

Stone Arabia

Sept. 15, 3 p.m. — Trinity Lutheran Church, located on Route 10, three miles north of Palatine Bridge, will hold a drive through chicken barbecue (halves only) from 3 p.m. until sold out. Proceeds will be used to defray the cost of maintaining the church cemetery.

Oct. 7, 2 p.m. — The Valley Choralaires will perform the first concert of the season at the Stone Church on Route 10 north of Palatine Bridge in Stone Arabia. This concert is sponsored by the Stone Arabia Preservation Society. The Choralaires will share the stage with the Revisions Barbershop Quartet. Admission is free and The Preservation Society will furnish free home made refreshments. A free will offering will be accepted.
