Canajoharie

Sept. 14, 5 p.m. — The Canajoharie High School Class of 1967 would like to invite all interested classmates and their guests to a “Meet and Greet” night at the Canajoharie Country Club. Sept. 22, 1-5 p.m. — The 2012 Artists’ Studios Tour, sponsored by the Arts Factory of Montgomery County (TAFMC), will take place. Ten outstanding artists from western Montgomery County have agreed to give the public a rare glimpse into their working environments, techniques of mastery and recent works.

Featured artists are: Joanne C. Resch, a watercolorist in Fort Plain; MaryAnn Nellis, a potter in Canajoharie; Robert E. Smith, a fortepiano maker, restorer and furniture maker in St. Johnsville; Terry Potoczny, a Minden photographer; Jan Skidmore, a multi-media artist in Fort Plain; Chris Duncan, a sculptor in Canajoharie; Alice Smith Duncan, a gilder and frame restorer in Canajoharie; Matthew Hopkins, a painter in Ames; Michael McCarthy, a blacksmith located in Ames; and Jasmine Crowe, a potter in the Sprout Brook area.

Tickets for the Artists’ Studios tour are $10 and may be purchased at the Fort Plain Free Library, the Margaret Reaney Memorial Library in St. Johnsville and at the Canajoharie Library from September 8 through the afternoon of September 22.

Arkell Center

Daily activities taking place at Arkell Center during the month of September 2012 will be as follows:

Sept. 19, 1 p.m. — “Terra Cotta Warriers from China”, a DVD presentation and visuals, will take place by Bonnie Kerr.

Sept. 25, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. — A blood pressure clinic will be held with Home Health Care Partners Corp., co-sponsored by St. Mary’s Hospital and Nathan Littauer Hospital. In addition to conducting the blood pressure clinic, Home Health Care Partners Corp., also provides health and wellness information.

Sept. 26, 12:45 p.m. — A public card party will be held. Donation is $2 with prizes.

Sept. 28, 1 p.m. — A senior citizens club meeting will take place. Following the meeting at 1:30 p.m., the Attorney General’s Office will present a program on identity theft.

Sept. 27, 2-3 p.m. — The Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Support Group meeting will be held with Lisa Hubbard. This service is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern NY.

Sept. 28, 1 p.m. — The Canajoharie Senior Citizens meeting will be held, with programs to follow.

Fort Plain

Sept. 15 and 16 —  Church Block Party will be held September 15 and 16 at Wiles Park. On Saturday, the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. A welcome will be provided at noon, and speakers and bands will perform until 9 p.m. Featured will be headliner Derek Joseph and Isaiah6, playing from 7:30-9 p.m., and offering worship and closing message. Saturday will also feature Frankie’s Barbecue chicken, at $7 a ticket.

On Sunday, the day will open at 10:30 a.m. with an opening prayer call to worship. Various local ministries will partake in 4 ever 1: Sunday Morning Worship, which will be followed by a potluck picnic.

Sept. 17, 6:30 p.m. — The Fort Plain Autism/Special Needs Support Group will be holding their meeting at the United Methodist Church of Fort Plain, 39 Center St. and Lydius.

The workshop will focus on “What Happens When...?” with William Van Evera, CLU, ChFC, ChSNC and Tara Anne Pleat, Esq. of Mass Mutual. Parents, guardians, family members, educators, therapists, students, Pastors and Sunday school teachers and the community are welcomed to come and learn, discover, support, share, promote and network with professionals and other parents. Sept. 22, 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. — The first of what the Arts Factory hopes to make an annual sidewalk chalk drawing event will be held at Haslett Park. The Arts Factory is looking for artists of all ages and skill levels to participate. Chalk will be provided, although artists are invited to bring their own if they desire. Sept. 23, 2 p.m. — The Fort Plain Library will host the second discussion on the award winning novel “The Book Thief” by Mark Zusak. The discussion will be facilitated by the poet and author Mary Cuffe Perez. No registration is necessary. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk for check-out.

He will also answer questions pertaining to the village.

Sept. 19, 10 a.m. — Nifty Needles will resume at Margaret Reaney Memorial Library located in St. Johnsville. The group is open to anyone who enjoys working on handcrafts including sewers, knitters and quilters. All are welcome to gather around the table. Nifty Needles will continue to meet the first and third Wednesday of each month throughout the fall, winter and spring. Sept. 22, noon-6 p.m. — A benefit for “St. Paul’s Furnace Fund”, will be held at the H. C. Smith Benefit Club. Hamburgers, hot dogs and sausage will be served all day. A pork roast dinner will be served at 5 p.m. There will be a live auction before dinner, bake sale, 50/50 and other raffles, Chinese auction, activities for children, face painting, dunking booth and more. Stone Arabia

Sept. 15, 3 p.m. — Trinity Lutheran Church, located on Route 10, three miles north of Palatine Bridge, will hold a drive through chicken barbecue (halves only) from 3 p.m. until sold out. Proceeds from this event will be used to defray the cost of maintaining the church cemetery.

Oct. 7, 2 p.m. — The Valley Choralaires will perform the first concert of the season at the Stone Church on Route 10 north of Palatine Bridge in Stone Arabia. This concert is sponsored by the Stone Arabia Preservation Society. The Choralaires will share the stage with the Revisions Barbershop Quartet. Admission is free and The Preservation Society will furnish free home made refreshments. A free will offering will be accepted.
