Photo submitted - Holiday donation - The character word for December at the D.H. Robbins Elementary School was generosity. The school community raised more than $1,100 for the H.C. Smith Benefit Club, an organization that helps local families. Students who made donations were entered into a drawing for more than 50 toys and other items provided by teachers, employees and community members. First grader Ashlyn Strobel and sixth grader Abigail Burkhart, won the grand prizes — Wii video game systems — donated by the PTO.

Arkell Hall adult home news

CANAJOHARIE — The following news from Arkell Hall is for Dec. 18 through Dec. 29:

A Christmas scene, featuring a small country church with parishioners arriving in a horse and sleigh, was the setting that teacher Joanne Resch chose for Arkell’s watercolor class.

Church fellowship time was held Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Miriam Barnes. At 10:45 a.m. the Little Friends Nursery School visited, and at 12 Noon, seven guests from NBT Bank were dinner guests. Christmas bingo with Dorothy Mailloux and Nancy Mace took place at 1:30 p.m.. At 7 p.m., Rachael Takacs and Linda Klump entertained residents with a special program of carols, dolls and antique muffs.

Jan Markle brought in a youth group to sing carols at dinner time, also bringing cookies and gifts for residents. Eight residents then set off on a ride to view local Christmas lights.

On Thursday, Dec. 20, Arkell had a Santa party beginning with a performance by Elinor Douglass and Friends with Dorothy Mailloux, Dorothy Morrison, Alice McEwan, Carolyn Crouch, Nancy Mace and Marion Harris. This was followed by Arkell’s joint staff and resident gift exchange. Santa passed out Christmas stockings to residents.

Santa visited again on Friday, Dec. 21, when a special Christmas concert DVD, featuring fabulous music and scenery, was shown.

Mary Simpson brought in a special movie “Christmas Angel”.

On Christmas Eve morning, Dorothy Mailloux brought communion for catholic residents. Christmas Eve, Arkell residents enjoyed a visit from Mel the Elf, and staff member Emily Voght, to pass out gifts left by the Arkell Hall Santa. They also sang carols and enjoyed cookies and eggnog.

Christmas day, residents enjoyed a holiday dinner.

Dec. 26 was a day of rest.

Several residents went out or had visits from family members and friends.

Beagle Club rabbit hunt, buffet Jan. 19

FORT PLAIN — The Fort Plain Beagle Club will host a rabbit hunt and italian buffet at the South Minden Fire Department, Route 163, Fort Plain, on Saturday, Jan. 19. There will be two divisions — hare and cottontail. Senior class will be held for hunters 16 and under. Hunters must comply with Department of Environmental Conservation regulations. In order to participate, hunters must be registered by mail by Tuesday, Jan. 15, or have entry form and money turned into a club member by Jan. 19. Event is BYOB. Senior Center to offer driving, CPR

FORT PLAIN — The Fort Plain Senior Center will be hosting an AARP Safe Driving Course Saturday, Jan. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Call (315) 823-2423 or (518) 993-3432, to sign up. On Friday, Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 Noon, the Fort Plain Senior Center will be hosting a CPR Course. The instructor will be Mike Butts. Call (518) 993-4342 to sign up.

Monthly pancake breakfasts to start

CANAJOHARIE — The Canajoharie Moose Club will hold three monthly benefit pancake breakfasts, beginning Sunday, Jan. 6, from 7 a.m. to 12 Noon. The breakfasts, held again Feb. 3 and March 3, will benefit the Forest Preserve Users Snowmobile Club. The breakfast will include pancakes, french toast, sausage, eggs, sausage gravy, applesauce, real maple syrup, orange juice, coffee, tea and milk. Adult admission is $7, children 5-12 are $4, under 5 eat free.

Garbage, recycling pick-up Jan. 5

ST. JOHNSVILLE — The town of St. Johnsville rural residents are scheduled for garbage and recycling pick up Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013. The regular schedule will resume Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.
