On Feb. 14, Fort Plain voters to decide fate of a bus proposition

FORT PLAIN — On Tuesday, Feb. 14, Fort Plain Central School District residents will vote on two referendums, including one that would authorize the district to spend $90,000 to buy a half-size handicapped-accessible bus and security cameras on other buses.

Because the district would use reserve funds for the purchases, there would be no effect on local property taxes.

“The district would pay for the bus and cameras using a capital reserve account within the district’s general fund, said Super-intendent Douglas C. Burton. “The money in that account has been set aside for this purpose and can only be used for capital projects and buses (with voter approval), so the purchase won’t cost the taxpayers anything.”

Below are some answers to questions residents may have:

• Why does the district need a new bus?

The current handicapped-accessible van has over 100,000 miles and requires more costly maintenance than any bus in the fleet. If voters approve the measure, the district would replace the old van with a new bus at a cost not to exceed $72,000. In addition to having the latest safety features and not needing routine repairs, the new van would have a flexible floor plan to accommodate more wheelchairs than the old. The district would then sell the old van and place the proceeds back in the general fund.

• Why are cameras on buses important?

District experience and current research demonstrates the importance of camera systems to keep the driver and students safe and to help maintain onboard discipline. These cameras (not to exceed a cost of $18,000 according to the proposition) would be installed on buses that currently do not have cameras or replace outdated bus cameras.

• What does the latest research show?

A study conducted by Trans-portation Advisory Services in June suggested installing cameras on all buses. The study said camera systems are an important part of any discipline program while also providing protection for drivers.
