Volunteers needed to prepare returns

Wednesday, January 29, 2014 - Updated: 8:19 PM

FONDA -- The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Coalition of Fulton and Montgomery counties is seeking volunteers to spend time learning about taxes and sharing that knowledge with others by preparing federal and state tax returns.

The VITA program provides free preparation of simple federal and state tax returns for families and individuals whose annual income is less than $50,000. Volunteers assist low- to moderate-income taxpayers to help them avoid the high fees imposed by paid preparers.

All volunteers receive extensive training from other experienced VITA volunteers, all of whom are IRS-certified to prepare and file tax returns. The local VITA coalition has many sites throughout the two counties that need help, so volunteers can choose a location that is convenient for them. Volunteer assistance is vital for the success of the VITA program.

Anyone interested in becoming a VITA volunteer can contact Fulmont Community Action Agency Inc. at 853-3011.
