Board accepts low bid for Wagner Square work and discusses Moyer Street parking

CANAJOHARIE — The Village Board of Canajoharie accepted a bid of $331,561, from Central Paving, for Wagner Square work scheduled to take place from April 1 to June 28, 2012.

The bid encompasses infrastructure work, including replacement and repair of storm sewers, along with the installation of pipe lining and new catch basins. It also includes streetscape work, such as the replacement of curbs, sidewalks, and the milling of all pavement on Wagner Square and Little Mohawk Street.

The board reviewed all bids with Delaware Engineering, which recommended that they accept the low bid from Central Paving.

Trustee Ronald Dievendorf noted that the low bid came in below original estimates, so the board has money to do extra work, or to use in case they run into unexpected problems.

The highest bid came in at $593,163.23.

During Tuesday’s village meeting, the board discussed parking on upper Moyer St. The discussion was provoked by a recent fender-bender on the village owned portion of the road, which begins around 229 Moyer St. and continues to the Carlisle Rd. intersection. The portion of the street below the divider is owned and maintained by New York State.

Mayor Francis Avery stated that there is no parking regulation on upper Moyer Street, where there is currently parking allowed on both sides. He wondered whether the board was interested in creating a local law to regulate parking.

Fire Chief Frank Nestle recommended that parking only be allowed on the South side of the street, as it’s hard to get a regular vehicle through, and almost impossible to fit emergency vehicles through when cars are parked on both sides.

The board decided to speak to Police Chief Leonard Price Wednesday, to receive his recommendation. If he agrees with banning parking on the North side of upper Moyer Street, the board will contact MacKenzie and Tallent to draft a local law.
