This is a golden year for Fulton-Montgomery Community College. As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the college is continuing to host special events drawing newcomers, in addition to welcoming alumni back to the campus.

In October, Gloversville's native son, Richard Russo, kicked off the year-long observance. Nearly 700 community members were transported back to Gloversville of the 1960s via the author's personal narrative, recalling his coming-of-age in the small city that was fashioned by the leather industry. It was during that decade that local visionaries proposed building the college.

On Friday, March 21, the 50th anniversary gala is set to commemorate the date in 1963 when the charter establishing FM was signed by the boards of supervisors of Fulton and Montgomery counties, as well as the board of trustees for the State University of New York.

Enthusiastic members of the gala committee have been hard at work since early fall, planning an event that is sure to honor the creation of the college and "wow" the community. Guests are invited to don formal attire, black tie optional, to walk the blue carpet as they enter a spectacularly transformed Raiders Den. Beautifully appointed dining tables for groups of eight, plus casual lounge seating, will surround a spacious dance floor. Well-known Capital District band, The New York Players, is sure to electrify the atmosphere with a dazzling blend of dinner and dance music.

An extensive array of appetizers, plus full bar service, is on tap for the cocktail hour. Lauren Saltsman, head chef for Chartwells Food Service, has selected an outstanding variety of delectable dinner entrees. Each guest will receive a complimentary champagne flute, exclusively designed to commemorate the FM 50th anniversary gala. Finally, dinner would not be complete without a sweet bevy of specially prepared desserts.

Gala-goers will be able to preserve their special memories of the evening. Photographer Bill Trojann will be on-hand to capture formal images of guests as they arrive. He will also be snapping candid shots throughout the evening. Photographs will be available for purchase following the event. Another element certain to add fun to the festivities is a photo booth.

The gala committee recently sponsored a 50th anniversary poster contest. Students and community members were asked to create an original work of art to be used in advertising the event. The winning poster was submitted by student Sarah J. Magistro of Fort Plain. It perfectly depicts the celebratory spirit of the gala.

The gala presents a golden opportunity for the college community's family and friends to unite in celebrating 50 fabulous years of FM. For ticket information please contact the foundation office at 736-FMCC (3622), extension 8020. Reservations are requested by Friday, March 7.

Shirl Doherty is TRiO SSS learning services coordinator at Fulton-Montgomery Community College and co-chair, along with Cynthia Close, for the 50th anniversary gala committee.
