Route 80 Bridge to close June 23

Wednesday, March 12, 2014 - Updated: 8:02 PM

FORT PLAIN -- The Route 80 Bridge connecting Fort Plain to Nelliston over the Mohawk River will be closed for refurbishment and strengthening work on June 23. The bridge will remain closed until early September, prior to the opening of school.

The bridge will be closed both ways to all traffic.

The New York State Department of Transportation outlined the work during an informational session held over two years ago, noting that several gusset plates would be replaced to avoid the bridge's decline in strength.

Mayor Guy Barton said "the scope of the work should remain the same," although the DOT has told him that another informational meeting should be scheduled prior to the project's start "to update people on what will be transpiring."

As far as Barton is aware, the bridge's quality has not degraded since the original informational meeting. He said, "They haven't lowered the tonnage, which is the first sign that it's deteriorated more than it had previously. If it's lowered, buses won't be able to cross it."

Some DOT work took place on the bridge's walkways last fall, with steel reinforcement beams installed underneath them, although Barton said only limited work occurred "because we had an early winter and all kinds of hassle."
