ST. JOHNSVILLE -- Last Thursday evening, the bleachers were packed to the rafters, and the gymnasium at the OESJ High School was full of energy and laughter, as the Harlem Rockets comedy basketball troupe faced off against the OESJ Dream Team, consisting of district faculty members and senior students.

While the Harlem Rockets usually dominate from the outset of the lighthearted annual fundraising game, the OESJ Dream Team kept up respectably throughout, earning 13 points to the Harlem Rockets' 20 at the end of the first quarter, trailing, but steadily earning points through the rest of the game.

Thursday's game only halted briefly for moments of hilarity, when the Harlem Rockets interacted with young crowd members and students, at one point inviting the crowd onto the floor for a dance break.

Although the Harlem Rockets' visit is usually a full day affair in the district, with the group putting on assemblies for the elementary and high schools, the day's activities were cancelled this year so that students and faculty could attend the funeral service of beloved educator Marie Colorito.

This year's event was a fundraiser for the Class of 2014. Money raised will be put toward their senior trip, which students hope to take to Universal Studios, Orlando, Florida.

It's imperative for the class of 2014 to raise as much money as possible before they graduate, as they've fallen behind in fundraising activities due to the fact that OESJ classes were without advisors from July through November of 2013, meaning they lost five months of fundraising opportunities. "It really put us behind schedule," said 2014 Advisor Stephanie Johnson, who has been with the senior class, aside from the five months in 2013, since they were in eighth grade.

There are numerous fundraisers coming up for the class including Friday's Pie-a-Senior Day during lunch in the high school cafeteria, an 80's Night Dance on March 21, an Inflatable Jousting Competition on March 22, a bottle drive on March 29, Family Portraits on March 29-30, Wolf Games on April 26 (which Johnson referred to as a "Hunger Games" style event "without the killing"), and another bottle drive on April 26.

A continuous bottle drive is also taking place. At any time during regular business hours, the public can drop off refundable cans and bottles at Amy's Recycling Center, Mechanic St., St. Johnsville, and say they are for the OESJ Senior Class.

Of the students participating in last Thursday's game -- which was extremely hard to pin down a date for according to Johnson, as the month was packed with other events, vacations and conference days -- "they had a lot of fun!"

Johnson continued, appreciatively, "Thanks to everybody who came out to support the class of 2014 in their fundraising goals."
