FORT PLAIN — Lindsay Countryman, a junior at Fort Plain High School, has been selected to attend American Legion Auxiliary Girl's State according to Shirley Coleman, a representative of the local unit #554.

She was chosen for her scholarship, character and her ability to cooperate.

Empire Girl's State is a week long, hands-on workshop on government, the political process and leadership.

It is a non-partisan school of government which educates young women in the duties, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.

The New York State Board of Regents certified Girl's State as an integral part of a college course-equivalent study program. Each citizen has the opportunity to earn up to three college credits.

The 2013 session will be held at the State University of New York at Brockport from June 30 to July 6.

She will attend the Fourth District Girl's State orientation at Plattsburg. This informational session will prepare her for her week at Brockport.

Her activities include band, health and wellness committees, library club, nutrition committee, OK2XLO and student council.

She is the daughter of Martha and David Countryman.

Alexis Haponski, daughter of Arthur and Sheila Haponski, was chosen as an alternate.
