ST. JOHNSVILLE -- On Friday afternoon, D.H. Robbins Students danced away the afternoon during a special, fitness-focused event aimed at raising awareness of the importance of daily exercise.

Radio Disney and Blue Cross/Blue Shield partnered to bring the "Get Active, Get Fit School Challenge" to various districts. The OESJ students competed for a chance to win the Radio Disney Dance Party from Sept. 30-Nov. 23, spending 20 minutes of each day exercising in a variety of ways.

Getting fit meant doing anything active, both at home and school, including playing soccer, dancing, walking the dog and jumping rope. During Friday's event, kids were asked about some popular events they love to do to keep fit, with answers ranging from riding a bicycle to "running with sticks," an answer that brought a wave of friendly laughter from the already-excitable crowd.

At the conclusion of the program in November, the results were sent to Radio Disney and the top five participating schools won a dance party, with all schools participating automatically entered to win $500 worth of gymnasium equipment.

Along with the Radio Disney Dance Party, the district also received the gym equipment, which included hula hoops, soccer balls, balls for outdoor use, cones, bean bags, and bases.

Friday, grouped in a big crowd in the middle of the gymnasium, the students were led through a variety of dance routines, games, and question-and-answer sessions, all to the tune of today's most popular music. At points, students were even asked to come up front and show off their best dance moves, which were then mimicked by their peers.

Students were also invited to participate in light speed sports, hula hooping in rapid succession and bouncing a basketball around an obstacle course of cones, led through each routine by the unstoppable, endlessly energetic Host Jennifer Radigan.

This was the second year that D.H. Robbins Elementary School was awarded a Radio Disney Dance Party, as the students earned one last year as well.
