Students write letters for Military Child Appreciation Month

FORT PLAIN -- Students in Melanie Pombrio’s and Nancy Wilder’s classes at Fort Plain Jr. /Sr. High School wrote “thank you” letters and appreciation cards in April in recognition of Military Child Appreciation Month.

The letters and cards go to children of military families living in Fulton and Montgomery county throughout the month.

Both teachers supplied the construction paper, colored pencils and other materials, and about 60 students participated. On April 9, Pombrio delivered the letters to the HFM Prevention Council in Johnston.

“The kids really loved doing this,” she said. “They were able to be creative and show their appreciation for the younger students who make sacrifices.”

The teachers thought it would be a good activity for students after superintendent Douglas Burton sent an email to teachers reminding them of the event.

“It’s important to not only recognize the people who serve our country, but the children who are at home,” Burton said.
