Alcohol sting nets 5 local arrests

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 - Updated: 6:43 AM

Twelve people were arrested during a recent alcohol sting conducted by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the state Liquor Authority, including five locals.

Undersheriff Jeffery T. Smith said the percentage of vendors which sold alcohol to minors during the operation was startling.

"A total of 31 establishments were checked and 12 arrests made. This is unacceptable, and shows that alcohol is getting into the hands of people under the age of 21 way too often. To be successful purchasing alcohol as a minor 38.7 percent of the time is far too dangerous. As proms, graduation and summer holiday seasons approach, this needs to change."

Departments from Amsterdam, Canajoharie, Fort Plain, and St. Johnsville all assisted within their respective jurisdictions, with Amsterdam police conducting the arrests within the city.

The following local individuals were respectively charged with unlawful dealing with a child, a misdemeanor, and issued appearance tickets to appear in court at a later date. Smith said they did not properly identify the underage individual, and did sell the alcohol unlawfully to a person under the age of 21:

-- Renee L. Raux, 51, of 4 Handy Drive, St. Johnsville (Little M Mart, St. Johnsville)

-- Brandon Terrell, 31 of 68 Mohawk St., Fort Plain (Save A Lot, Fort Plain)

-- Nisar Rana, 40, 11 Erie Blvd., Canajoharie (Petro USA LLC, Canajoharie)

-- Kenneth Daly, 70, of 5 James St., Johnstown (Dalys Liquor Mart, Palatine Bridge)

-- Alcide T. Bourdeau, 69, of 14 Berthoud St., Nelliston (Rite Aid, Palatine Bridge)

The following local businesses were congratulated for properly requiring the underage individual to show identification in their attempt to purchase alcohol:

Stewarts, St. Johnsville; Kinney Drugs, St. Johnsville; Cumberland Farms, St. Johnsville; Stewarts, Fort Plain; Nice N Easy, Fort Plain; Wrath of Grapes, Fort Plain; Flint Liquors, Canajoharie; Quick Gas Mart, Canajoharie; Cumberland Farms, Palatine Bridge; Price Chopper, Palatine Bridge; Stewarts, Palatine Bridge.
