FONDA -- The Montgomery County Water Quality Coordinating Committee is seeking help from the public in maintaining a database of all the waterways that flow through the county.

The committee is sponsoring a photo contest to aid its ongoing photo inventory of county waterways.

"The water quality coordinating committee's mission is education and outreach in the community. Having photo inventory would help with that goal," committee chairman Patrick Clear said. "If people want to see what kind of water resources there are here in the county, they can go on the website, or on Facebook and they can see different pictures."

The contest started April 1 and will run until Aug. 15. All photos submitted must be taken between those dates.

Clear said what the committee is looking for is any pictures of the streams, the Mohawk River or any bodies of water in the county.

"Everyone knows the area for Mohawk River, but there are lot of tributaries that flow into it," he said. "We are not looking for one picture of the Mohawk River. There are a lot of great pictures you can get of the waterways."

Clear said that the committee started building the photo inventory about two years ago, when a committee member suggested holding a photo contest to encourage people to find interesting places along the rivers and streams.

The first contest was held at the 2012 Fonda Fair, and has continued ever since.

Photos can be e-mailed to Digital photos must be minimum 1 megabyte or maximum 3 megabytes. Photos can also be mailed to or dropped off at the Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District office, 4001 Route 5S, Fultonville. Entries are due Aug. 15.

Photos will be judged by members of the water quality committee on topic, photographic technique and artistry.

Awards of $100, $75 and $50 will be given to the top photos. The top 10 photos will be printed and displayed at this year's Fonda Fair, and will be open for voting for a People's Choice Award.
