ST. JOHNSVILLE -- Sheldon Howard, a St. Johnsville resident, and world class karate competitor recently took home "Competitor of the Day" honors at a karate competition held in the New York City/Long Island area that attracted teams from as far as Japan and Italy.

Howard took home silver medals at the East Coast Open in weapons, forms and fighting, becoming the only black belt in his division to medal in all three events.

Howard is both a Karate and Tae Kwon Do champion. Earlier this year, Howard took home four first place trophies at the American Karate Association Grand Nationals that were held in Chicago.

Howard followed his karate performance in Chicago by winning the AAU regionals for Tae kwon Do and will be a member of the New York State Tae Kwon Do team competing in Florida in early July for the AAU Tae Kwon Do National Championship.

Howard was named as "Competitor of the Year" by the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame for 2012 and 2013. A 38 year veteran of the martial arts, he has won over 80 medals and trophies in domestic and international competitions in just the last four years as he maintains a busy competition schedule.

Howard recently returned at the Wellness and Group Exercise Director at the Fulton County YMCA, where he also conducts personal training. Howard, who is also a Master level Tai Chi instructor, also teaches tai chi classes at the YMCA.
