Photo submitted - Students sign banner for soldier - Students from the Canajoharie High School History Club presented high school Secretary Lea White with a banner for her husband, Scott on Thursday, May 31.  Scott White, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army National Guard, has been serving in Afghanistan since February. “It was the nicest thing to just say ‘thank you.’ It was really sweet,” White said. The banner is more than 40 feet long and students and staff from around the entire school signed it. Next week, staff members plan to send the banner to Scott. History Teacher Phil Horender said the students and staff wanted to do something to say “thank you” because of Memorial Day and because it is also National Military Appreciation Month.

Photo submitted - Fifth-graders tour Helmont Mills - East Hill Elementary School fifth-graders visited Helmont Mills Inc. in St Johnsville recently. The visit to the mill was a culminating activity for the Project Based Learning Unit on the Industrial Revolution. Helmont Mills Inc. doesn’t normally give tours, but they agreed to let East Hill students enter after a request was submitted.

Hlozansky earns scholarship award

FORT PLAIN — Brynn Hlozansky was selected as the recipient of a $500 award given by the Pi Chapter Scholarship Committee of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society for Women Educators.

Hlozansky was chosen from numerous exceptional applicants.

This award is given annually to a high school senior entering the field of education. Selection is based on high school transcripts, SAT scores, an essay stating educational goals, participation in community and extra-curricular activities, and a letter of recommendation.

Activities to benefit cancer charities

ST. JOHNSVILLE — Oppenheim-Ephratah Central School District is conducting various activities to support local charities that fight cancer such as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Through Friday, June 8, the district will sell cut-outs of hands in tribute to anyone who has been has been touched by cancer.

The cut-outs will be sold for 25 cents each, and all money raised will go directly to local cancer charities. The class that sells the most hand cut-outs will win an ice cream party.

Students, faculty and staff, and community members are welcome to purchase the hand cut-out and write on and decorate the hands however they want. The hands will be on display throughout the school week and at the Dolgeville Relay for Life on June 16 and 17.

There also will be a Relay for Life pep rally at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the gymnasium at the school district, and parents are invited to attend.

MRML museum to remain closed

ST. JOHNSVILLE — The board of Trustees at Margaret Reaney Memorial Library has announced that the in-house museum will remain closed until further notice. An extensive re-furbishing and cleaning of the exhibits was started in January and continues. It was hoped that the collections would be ready by early June, but the work involved has proven to be considerably more involved than originally anticipated. An open house will be announced at a later date.

Fieldstone to perform June 9

CANAJOHARIE — On Saturday, June 9 at 7 p.m., the group Fieldstone will present their mix of folk, Celtic and Appalachian roots music at the Arkell Museum and Canajoharie Library, 2 Erie Boulevard in Canajoharie. The performance, a part of the Canajoharie Concert Series, is funded, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts.

Fieldstone has drawn critical praise for their distinctive blend of high-octane Celtic coupled with a liberal dash of Appalachian and old-time fiddle pieces, along with a sprinkling of originals and reinterpretations of some contemporary songwriter fare.

The trio, made up of Mark and Bekki Titchner and fiddle champion Tara Sansom, has produced several CDs, most recently “One More Mile”.

Tickets for the performance in Canajoharie, which are $7 for adults and $3.50 for children 10-17 by advance sale, are available by calling the Arkell Museum at Canajoharie at (518) 673-2314. Tickets at the door will be $8 for adults and $4 for children.

Town of Root litter cleanup June 9

TOWN OF ROOT — The town of Root will be doing a volunteer roadside litter clean up on June 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Town residents that would like to participate may pick up the trash bags at the Town Hall on June 9 between 8 a.m. and 12 noon.

All litter removed from any roadside in the town may be returned to the town highway garage in Flat Creek. The town will pay for all disposal costs of the litter.

Trinity Lutheran to present program

STONE ARABIA — Trinity Lutheran Church of Stone Arabia will host a special musical program on June 17 at their 9 a.m. Father’s Day Service.

The “Harmony Group Singers”, under the direction of Fort Plain music teacher Julianne Sincavage, will provide the music. Refreshments will follow the service. All are invited.

Fort Klock honoring flag day Saturday

ST. JOHNSVILLE — Fort Klock Historic Restoration, Route 5, St. Johnsville, is honoring flag day Saturday, June 9. The St. Johnsville American Legion and color guard, along with militia re-enactors, will be at the fort.

The event will start at noon with a speaker on the history and proper disposal of the american flag.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their worn and tattered flags to be burned. Refreshments will be served. Fort Klock is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (518) 568-7779.

Meet candidate Joel Tyner June 12

Meet and rally with Joel Tyner, opponent of New York State fracking and Democratic congressional candidate, on Tuesday, June 12 at 3 p.m. between Picture Perfect and Arkell Galleries on Erie Boulevard, Canajoharie.

Tyner is seeking election in the recently redrawn 19th congressional district, which now includes St. Johnsville, Minden, Palatine, Root and Canajoharie. Tyner is currently in his fifth term as Dutchess County legislator.

Following his visit to Canajoharie, Joel will visit the Saint Johnsville Marina around 4 p.m.

The community is also invited to an informational “meet, greet and eat”, (Dutch treat) at Lombardo’s Pizzeria Plus, 7845 Route 5, Saint Johnsville, NY.

Fourth Hammer-In is June 9 and 10

ST. JOHNSVILLE — Come one and all for the day, or camp overnight, to the fourth annual Fort Klock Hammer-In to be held June 9 and 10 on the Fort grounds.

All blacksmiths, and others interested in watching blacksmiths work at their ancient trade, are invited to attend. Activities planned include smithing, music, barbecue and camping.

If you have a portable forge, there is plenty of space for you to bring one, and are encouraged and welcomed to do so.

Those wishing to demonstrate or teach call Steve Gurzler, event coordinator, at 877-7148. Skilled demonstrators are currently being sought.

There are open fields for camping with plenty of space for tents. Anyone wishing to set up on Friday evening, June 8, are welcome to do so and advise Gurzler.

This year, Fort Klock is celebrating fifty years of being open to the public and additional events are planned.

The St. Johnsville American Legion has been invited to conduct their ceremony of burning old and tattered flags at Fort Klock this year on Saturday, June 9 at 12 noon. The American Legion will also provide a speaker on the history of United States flags.

Guided tours of Fort Klock are offered for a small fee. The trade room is open to all. This gift shop has many items for sale, including Mohawk Valley historical maps, books and memorabilia.

All funds donated to Fort Klock during special events are used for on-going restoration, maintenance and educational projects. All gifts are gratefully accepted and prudently spent.

The Fort Klock Historic Restoration museum complex is located two miles east of St. Johnsville on New York State Route 5.
