NELLISTON -- Fort Plain Mayor Guy Barton donated a new flag to the Canajoharie-Fort Plain Elks Lodge #2621 in honor of flag day.

Barton joined Exalted Ruler Michele Whiteman and Flag Day Chairman Karl Swartz to hang the new flag on a pole located across from the lodge, directly in front of the Mohawk River. Barton stated of the ideal location, "You can see it from the river, you can see it from the roadway."

Of the flag, he stated, "I'm donating it to the Elks for the wonderful job they do for the community, for the events they hold for the kids. They're a very community oriented organization."

Whiteman exclaimed, "Thank you Mayor Barton for the gift of this beautiful flag. We are honored that you felt us worthy of your donation."

She continued, "The Elks are distinctively American. Linking the destiny of our order with the destiny of our country, we have made its flag the symbol of the crowning virtue. We will fly this flag proudly so all who pass by will see it -- waving in the breeze -- displaying our pride and dedication to this flag and our country."

The Canajoharie-Fort Plain Elks Lodge is a very active fraternal organization that works to support veterans, youth and other entities throughout the community and surrounding areas. Each year, the organization sponsors soccer shoots, hoop shoots, Americanism Essay Contests, a Horseshoe Tournament at 4th on the 3rd, a fishing derby in July, breakfast with Santa, an Election Night Pancake Supper, and visits to the VA Hospital in Syracuse.

Whiteman concluded, "One of the most significant ceremonies conducted by our Lodge is the Flag Day Ceremony, which is celebrated in conjunction with the Little Falls, Herkimer and Ilion Lodges."
