Independence Day Events - 06/26/2014

FORT PLAIN -- The 27th annual 4th on the 3rd celebration, sponsored by the Fort Plain Community Activities Council, will take place on Thursday, July 3, at Wiles Park.

While most activities will be centered in Wiles Park, the celebration officially begins at 8 a.m. with the Mohawk River Fishing Derby. Sign-up at the Sportsman’s Den on Canal St., for children and adult classes. 

The Fishing Derby is free and sponsored by the Central Mohawk Valley Lions Club, and concludes at 3 p.m. Trophies will be awarded at 5 p.m.

Completely new this year will be a demonstration by the Civil War Reenactors from the NY 125th Volunteer Infantry Regiment, including a Civil War surgeon’s tent, encampment and rifle demonstration. 

Families with young children will delight in a bounce house, inflatable slide and obstacle course.

Food concessions will be available, offering hot dogs, hamburgers, fried dough, soda and water from 3-9 p.m. Horse-drawn hay wagon rides to the Fort Plain Museum and back will also operate from 4-8 p.m.

The Emeralds of July will perform from 4-7 p.m.

A Little League All Star Exhibition Game between Fort Plain and Canajoharie will begin at 4 p.m.

A rock climbing wall will be available from 5-9 p.m. and Empower Federal Credit Union will sponsor an Old Time Photo Booth and Melvin the Magnificent a balloon artist, free, from 4-8 p.m.

Wayne Tucker will DJ and emcee from 3-11 p.m. in Wiles Park. Craft fair and non-profit booths will be open from 3-9 p.m.

Brooks Chicken Barbecue dinners will be sold by the Fort Plain Reformed Church from 4-7 p.m. There is a separate parking area for take-outs; ask at the park entrance.

A petting zoo and pony rides will be available from 5-9 p.m.

Beginning at 6 p.m., you can play Just for Fun Bingo with prizes, or sign up for the Canajoharie-Fort Plain Elks Club Horseshoe Tournament. Play begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Rusty Mento Blue River Band will entertain from 8-11 p.m.

The enormous fireworks display will take place at 9:45 p.m. This event is underwritten by the Big Bang Club, the Yerdon Foundation and the day's barrel drive.

The bonfire and community sing-a-long begins at 10 p.m., at the conclusion of the fireworks display.

-- Independence Day & Strawberry Festival to be held July 4

ST. JOHNSVILLE -- An Independence Day celebration and Strawberry Festival will take place at Fort Klock on July 4, from Noon to 4 p.m. The Declaration of Independence reading will be at 1 p.m. followed by a Tryon County Militia patriotic musket salute. Add strawberries, homemade cakes, ice cream, strawberry shortcake and refreshments, for a small fee. Listen to musicians fill the air with old time music. -- Patriotic Organ Recital to be held July 4

CANAJOHARIE -- A Patriotic Organ Recital will be held at Upstate Chapel on Jully 4 at 7 p.m. All Upstate Chapel concerts and events are open to all, and free-will offerings are encouraged. All proceeds are used to promote musical arts in the Canajoharie, NY area.
