File photo - Sun Mountain Band to play - The Sun Mountain Band, featuring the Sun Mountain Fiddler Dick Solberg, will play their annual show in Salt Springville at the Windfall Dutch Barn on July 7. A potluck supper will take place at 7 p.m. The show will start at 8 p.m. The annual concert, which has taken place every year for decades, is a beloved tradition for the fiddler. He refers to the show as one of his “favorites” to play each year. Joining Solberg on stage will be his touring band, featuring 17-year veteran Steve Minnich on bass and lead guitar, and one-year rookie Kyle Love on rhythm guitar. Main dishes, sides, salads and desserts are all welcomed items for those participating in the potluck supper.

Photo submitted - Centenarians honored - On June 19, the Montgomery County Office for the Aging, Inc. presented each of the St. Johnsville Rehab and Nursing Center Centenarians with a bouquet of flowers donated by local florists. During the presentation there was a little surprise from Tillie Crocker. She sang “You are My Sunshine,” which brought a smile to everyone’s face. Photo submitted - Accomplishments in reading - Students at D.H. Robbins Elementary were recognized for accomplishments in reading during an assembly on June 19. Students in grades 1-6 read accelerated reader books, took quizzes on the computer and earned points. The top three students in grades 1-3 won awards. Armand Root earned first place with 108 points, Jordan Simzer came in second with 44 points, and Max Kadric took third with 38 points. The top three students in grades 4-6 also won awards. Jacob Jewell took first place with 376 points, Dakota Hayes came in second with 172 points, and Jack Brundage came in third with 129 points. Michele Faye Band to play July 10

CANAJOHARIE — On Tuesday, July 10, Canajoharie’s Music on Main Street will kick off its summer season by welcoming the Michele Faye Band to the downtown NBT Bank lawn. The free concert will begin at 7 p.m.

The Michele Faye Band plays a mix of traditional, swing and bluegrass influenced music with rich female harmonies. Many of the songs are Michele’s originals, inspired by life in Vermont, past and present. Together, the four members play captivating music ranging from upbeat fiddle tunes to thought provoking ballads.

Revival weekend on Fiery Hill

FORT PLAIN — From July 6 to July 8, a Revival Weekend on Fiery Hill will take place with a weekend of events including daily concerts, hay rides, outdoor sports, seminars on various topics, catch-and-release fishing, and more. The weekend begins on Friday afternoon, lasting until the Sky Family Concert on Sunday afternoon. This will take place at the Delnero Farm, 522 Phillip Road (from Fort Plain, Rt. 80 South, the next right after Fordsbush Road). Admission is free. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Detailed schedule and additional information will be available at www.Delnero.com/revival. This event is presented by Christian churches of the Mohawk Valley.

St. Johnsville ice cream social July 13

ST. JOHNSVILLE — The Catholic Community of St. Johnsville is sponsoring their third annual Ice Cream Social on Friday, July 13, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. It will be held at the St. Johnsville American Legion on Main Street.

Featured entertainment will be a live performance by Travins and Trondreau, of

Eclectic Songs with Linda Terricola. Travins and Trondreau, a duo, write their own songs and play blues, country and rock, both old and new. In addition, they cover legendary artists such as Frank Sinatra, John Mayer, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Montgomery Gentry and Brooks and Dunn. Linda Terricola, owner of Eclectic Songs, will be the master of ceremonies and DJ.  

The cost for tickets will be $4 for adults, $2 for children five to ten, free for children under five. The cost for hot dogs will be $1, which is not included in the ticket price. Ice cream has been donated by Stewart’s Shops, and hot dogs have been donated by Little M. All proceeds will benefit the Catholic Community of St. Johnsville.

Young pioneer program to be held

ST. JOHNSVILLE — The twentieth annual Fort Klock Young Pioneer Program, to be held at Fort Klock August 7-9, will help children explore, experience and celebrate history. This three day educational program is designed to offer children ages nine through thirteen a colonial adventure.

Through hands-on activities, children will experience lifestyles and tasks from the colonial period, including candle making, spinning and weaving, cooking and playing eighteenth century games.

There is a small fee for this program. Only 20 students will be accepted, so call (518) 568-7779 to register before July 23.

Scrabble champ is crowned

CANAJOHARIE — The fifth grade Scrabble Championship was held for two days at East Hill School. Throughout the year, students in Joan Kolodziej’s class learned the rules of the game and had opportunities to challenge their classmates.

The twenty students in the class played an elimination round early in the last week of school and the winners of those games played the championship match on the last day.

It was an exceptional match, as the five classmates created an exciting board full of words. The group utilized all 100 letters, as the lead changed numerous times during the event, with Drew Douglass ultimately succeeding in this year’s championship game. Placing a close second was Abby Smith. The other classmates in the championship round were Isaiah Logan, Hailey Snyder and Brandon Wolfkiel.

The grand prize of a new Scrabble game and a Scrabble Word-building book was presented to Douglass. A Scrabble Word-building book and Twizzlers went to Smith. Logan, Snyder and Wolfkiel also received Twizzlers.

School year ends with a dance

CANAJOHARIE — The fifth grade students at East Hill Elementary School ended the year with their first real dance. District residents, and DJs, Diane and Mickey Boslet, put on the social event as a special gift for their granddaughter, Aleah Schaffer, a fifth grade student. Playing the popular music of the day, selected by Aleah and her grandfather, the fifth graders danced, sang and celebrated their sendoff to middle school. Leah Schaffer, business manager of the Canajoharie Central School District, and Aleah’s mom, sang for the children. Garrett Oeser, a classmate of Schaffer, also sang to loud applause.

Local lottery winner named

FORT PLAIN —  On Monday, July 2, New York State Lottery announced the name of a Fort Plain Mega Millions player who won $10,000 in the drawing held on June 22. The winner, Heather Mosher, purchased the winning ticket at the Stewart’s Shop at 18 Willett Street.
