ST. JOHNSVILLE -- St. Johnsville's Summer Concert Series kicked off last Thursday at the St. Johnsville Marina after the first Monday concert of the season, featuring Linda Lee and the Fox Creek Band, was rescheduled due to bad weather.

Monday concerts began this week with a performance by the Second Time Around Big Band, who also opened Fort Plain's Summer Concert Series only two days earlier.

The band drew a large, attentive crowd, who were treated not only to a solo selection of big band classics and well known songs from various eras, but numerous vocal performances featuring Kristen Olochnwick, who sang, late in the band's set, the classic Wizard of Oz song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

For the 15th year, Denise LaCoppola planned the season's concerts, noting that while she booked one new band, Third Rael, she brought back mostly popular performers with huge local followings from previous years (partially based upon the request of attendees), including Linda Lee and the Fox Creek Band, the Sun Mountain Fiddler (who will play July 28), and the Karg Brothers (playing Aug. 11).

LaCoppola will serve snacks and drinks at four of the season's shows to raise money for the Soldiers and Sailors Park playground set fund. The group has been raising money at the summer concerts for years, as LaCoppola noted that a new set of playground equipment costs at least $40,000. She also said that she's attempting to secure grant funding to put toward the purchase.

LaCoppola said that if future Monday concerts are cancelled because of weather, the concerts may be held the following Thursday, depending on the availability of the band.

This Monday, July 21, the Sophisticats will play. All concerts take place from 6:30-:30 p.m. and are free to the public.
