-- Calarco book signing and presentation Aug. 14 focuses on Underground Railroad

FONDA -- On Thursday, August 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Montgomery County’s Old Courthouse on 9 Park Street, Fonda, author Tom Calarco will make a presentation and hold a book signing on a fascinating piece of local history — the Underground Railroad.

Because of its clandestine nature, much of the history of the Underground Railroad remains shrouded in secrecy -- so much so that some historians have even doubted its importance.

After decades of research, Tom Calarco recounts his experiences compiling evidence to give credence to the legend's oral history in upstate New York. As the Civil War loomed and politicians from the North and South debated the fate of slavery, brave New Yorkers risked their lives to help fugitive slaves escape bondage.

After the presentation Tom will be selling and autographing copies of his new book "The Search for the Underground Railroad in Upstate New York".

For more information, please call Montgomery County Historian Kelly Farquhar at (518) 853-8186.

-- Local Rabies Vaccination Clinic in Rural Grove Aug. 16

RURAL GROVE -- A Rabies Vaccination Clinic will take place Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Rural Grove Fire Department, Route 162, Rural Grove, from 9 a.m. to Noon.

New York State Public Health Law requires that all dogs, cats and domestic ferrets shall have initial vaccinations administered against rabies no later than four months of age and stay up to date with re-vaccinations. Re-vaccinations are required one year later and a booster shot every three years. It is important to have pets vaccinated in a timely manner in order for the pet to be considered protected against the virus. Pet owners should bring proof of their pet’s last rabies vaccination. This helps the veterinarian determine whether the pet will receive a one or three year vaccination; without it your pet will receive a one-year vaccination only.
