-- CYC race to be held Aug. 22

CANAJOHARIE -- The Canajoharie Community Youth Center's annual 5K Run, 1.5 Mile Walk and 1K Free Kids Run will take place Friday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. The fundraiser will raise money for the CYC, which has a variety of goals, including the expansion of the center's rock climbing wall.

$25 registration. Family discounts are available. Contact the CYC for family discount information.

T-shirts will be given to the first 100 registered participants. Awards will be provided to the top male and female finisher in each age group.

The race will feature a new event this year -- an emergency services 5K challenge, wherein local service agencies (police, fire sheriff, EMS, for example) will compete. All area departments are welcome.

Refreshments provided after the race at the CYC.

-- Ayres Shelter adoption clinic to be held Aug. 23

FONDA -- The Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter will hold an adoption clinic on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Bark-N-Play, West Main St., Fonda, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The shelter will show animals, including kittens, that will be up for adoption. Also, 15 percent will be offered on an in-store purchase for those who adopt.

-- Benefit for Norma Maring to be held Aug. 23

NELLISTON -- A Benefit for Norma Maring will be held at the Canajoharie-Fort Plain Elks Lodge, Old Station Rd., on Saturday, Aug. 23, beginning at 11 a.m. The event will feature a chicken barbecue, raffles and an auction. Raffle items will include a flat screen TV, Stihl chainsaw, $250 gift certificate to Fort Plain True Value, Parker crossbow and gift baskets. Tickets for the chicken dinner are $10. Tickets for chicken halves are $6. Raffle tickets are $10 each or 3 for $20. Available now at Lee Publications, Inc. or Fort Plain True Value.

All money raised will help Norma pay for recent uninsured surgery and cancer treatment.

Donated items can be dropped at Lee Publications, Inc., 6113 St. Highway 5, Palatine Bridge.

-- Howie and Debbie Campbell to perform in Haslett Park Aug. 23

FORT PLAIN -- Valley Alliance Church will sponsor a performance by Howie and Debbie Campbell in Haslett Park, Fort Plain, on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 6-8 p.m. The performers are a folk-style, singer songwriter duo.

-- 21st Vehicle Show and Craft Fair to be held Aug. 24

STONE ARABIA -- The Stone Arabia Preservation Society will hold their 21st Annual Vehicle Show and Craft Fair on Sunday, Aug. 24 at the Stone Church, Route 10, three miles north of Palatine Bridge.

The show will take place, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All entries must have a fire extinguisher and the first 100 will receive dash plaques.  

Music will be provided by DJ Sal Stokes. Refreshments will be available with door prizes drawn throughout the day.

Proceeds from the event are used for the continuing maintenance and preservation of the historic 1788 church, adjacent parsonage and cemetery.

-- Canajoharie sixth grade orientation set for August 26

CANAJOHARIE -- The Canajoharie Middle School will hold a sixth-grade orientation for students and families Tuesday, Aug. 26.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the middle school Gathering Space.

During orientation students will be able to get their schedules and locker assignments, see their classrooms and learn more about the school.

-- Root Town Council schedules Aug. 28 public hearing

ROOT -- The Root Town Council has scheduled a public hearing for Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. at the town offices. The purpose of the hearing is the State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) for the proposed Santos Construction Co. project expansion in Randall. The town of Root is the lead agency for this SEQR procedure.

-- Senior Saints to meet Sept. 3

ST. JOHNSVILLE -- The St. Johnsville Senior Saints will hold their first meeting following summer recess at the St. Johnsville Community House, 16 Washington St., on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 1:30 p.m.

Previous members, new members and guests are welcome.

-- Church to host chicken barbecue fundraiser Sept. 3

MARSHVILLE -- On Sept. 4, The Marshville Evangelical Church, Route 10, will hold a chicken barbecue from 3:30 p.m. until sold out. Cost for take-out is $6 per half chicken. On sale will be baked goods, beans, salad and baked potatoes. Pre-paid tickets should be picked up by 5 p.m. For more information, call (518) 673-2394.

-- Golf tournament to raise money for community chest Sept. 6

CANAJOHARIE -- The 18th Annual Mary Plank, Jim Dern and Richard Burgess Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the Canajoharie-Palatine-Root Community Chest will be held Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Canajoharie Golf and Country Club.

This tournament is a four person scramble that starts at 9 a.m. sharp (rain or shine). The entry fee is $90 per person ($75 for Canajoharie Country Club members) and includes a light breakfast, lunch buffet, cash prizes for first, second and third place winners along with many other games and prizes.

As part of the Annual Golf Tournament, the Community Chest is soliciting hole sponsors for $50. Your tax deductible donation will help provide financial assistance to local not-for-profits serving the Canajoharie, Palatine Bridge and Root areas.

-- Sign up for Sportsman Education Class

FORT PLAIN -- A Sportsman Education Class is scheduled for Sept. 17, 19 and 20. Preregistration is required and will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. Both the class and the preregistration will be held at the Tri-Town Coon Club,  Freysbush Road, about 3.6 miles south of Fort Plain. 

At the preregistration, students will sign up for the course, obtain study material, and additional instructions and information for the course. 

This 10 hour, D.E.C. class is required for anyone interested in obtaining a hunting license. Students 16 years of age and younger must have a parent or legal guardian present to sign D.E.C. forms. 

The class is Wed., Sept. 17, from 6-9 p.m.; Fri., Sept. 19, from 6-9 p.m.; and Sat., Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The class will consist of topics dealing with game identification, land owner relationships, different types of hunting implements, safe handling of firearms, along with other topics.

-- Elks to host "Hairball" for Ayres Animal Shelter on Oct. 11

NELLISTON -- The Canajoharie-Fort Plain Elks Lodge #2621, Old Station Rd., is hosting a "Hairball" to benefit the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m. 

The event will feature a Chinese auction, food, a 50/50 raffle, and music by the Vibratones, a Capital District rock, party and dance band. They'll play from 8 p.m. to midnight.

$5 donation at the door. Pet food and supplies also appreciated.

-- Benefit for Robin Surnear to be held Oct. 18

CANAJOHARIE -- A benefit for Robin Surnear will be held at the Canajoharie Moose Lodge, 205 Erie Blvd., on Oct. 18 from noon to 6 p.m. The money raised will help support Robin in her battle against lung cancer. The event will feature a Chinese auction, raffles, a bottle drive, music, food and much more. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids, and age four and under enter free. A door prize will be awarded.
