Born at the Fonda Fair

Wednesday, September 03, 2014 - Updated: 9:25 AM

FONDA -- A makeshift stall was built from bundles of hay in the cow palace last Wednesday morning to make room for the Fonda Fair's newest arrival.

At 1 a.m., Canary Secure Miami-Red, a holstein cow, gave birth to a calf who could be seen several hours later lying in its stall, seemingly unaware of the excitement around him.

While Miami owner Desiree Suits of Fort Plain said she has seen calves born before, it was a little different being alone with the laboring mother in the early morning hours.

"It was a little scary," she said, pointing to her father. "I had to call him at home a few times to ask what to do."

What was even more nerve wracking was that Miami was expected to perform in the 4-H dairy breeding judging later that morning and caused some last-minute adjustments to her class ranking.

Originally, she was categorized as a Holstein Dry Cow but given her new calf, Suits said they had to change her class to a milking junior 3-year-old.

"She wasn't due for another week," Suits said. "We were hoping to get through this but I guess she had other plans."

Suits' father came early in the morning to check on Miami and give her some vitamins that would help her recover from the birth.

By 9 p.m., though, Suits was cleaning Miami and prepping her for the competition that was to start shortly.

"She is ready," she said.

As for what the calf's name will be, that was left up for debate.

"I like Aiden," Suits said. When her father asked why, Suits just shrugged. "That is what I thought of. I like that name."
