FORT PLAIN — Labor Day was no holiday for area emergency crews summoned to Lock 15 on Monday to assist a child scalded by hot water.

Fort Plain Police Sgt. Carter said the child, a 10-year-old Vermont resident, was on a boat docked at the lock when the accident happened at around 5:15 p.m.

More than two dozen area residents picnicking at the site watched as a Life-Net helicopter, out of Glen, landed in an emergency landing zone established by Fort Plain firefighters in a nearby parking area.

Montgomery County Undersheriff Jeff Smith, an officer with the Fort Plain Fire Department, said the child, who sustained third-degree burns, was transported by Mid-County Ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital. Flight medics accompanied the Mid-County crew for the ground transport.

Additional information was unavailable.
