CANAJOHARIE — On Tuesday, about 20 Canajoharie Central School District students blanketed downtown, painting the windows of over 20 businesses in honor of Spirit Week.

The students, spanning middle through high school, began painting the windows around 3 p.m. and continued until it was too dark to see. While usually only the fall sports are represented on the windows — football, soccer, cheerleading, golf, volleyball and cross country — all 14 of the district’s sports were represented this year, as there was more space to fill than usual.

While it was noted that last year about ten businesses agreed to participate, the number doubled this year, as Kim Gustafson noted that businesses “see what it’s about and they want to be involved.”

Liberty consumers also helped to paint the windows, as Gustafson said “they wanted to support school spirit, and we’re glad to have them helping us.”

The paint will remain up for a longer period of time this year — over a week — and students will then return to clean the windows. Gustafson said that a booster club member will also visit each business to make sure they were satisfied with their involvement.

Two of the downtown windows were painted to promote the CCS website, www.canajoharieschools.org, which will be posting updated game schedules and scores. To access that information, visit the website’s athletics section.
