Commended students are recognized for the exceptional academic performance demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for entry. About 1.5 million juniors in close to 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. About 34,000 commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. The students placed among the top 5 percent of the students who took the qualifying test. “We’re very proud of her for scoring so well,” said Principal Deborah Larrabee, left.

Photo submitted - FPCS class of 1957 - The 55th reunion of the Fort Plain Central School Class of 1957 was held on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 at Saltsman’s Hotel in Ephratah. Dinner was served to 34 members of the class, their families and guests from the surrounding area, and destinations as far as Florida, New Mexico and Tennessee. Before the weekend festivities were complete, two more classmates were able to make a brief appearance. A moment of silence was held for departed classmates and comments from those that could not attend were shared. Twenty one attendees also enjoyed brunch at the Table at Fort Plain the next morning. Attending the reunion for the FPCS Class of 1957, but not pictured in the photo, were Janet Christie Farbent, Eric Doerrer, Gerald Douglass, Harold Eutermarks, Myra Fox, Roger McDuffey, Barbara Regal Dean and Joann Scabar Hudyncia. Photo submitted - FPCS students of the month - Junior/Senior High School Principal Deborah Larrabee has announced September Students of the Month for grades 7-12.  Students were nominated for this honor by teachers or other staff and selected by a vote of a committee of teachers. Senior Karis Ahrens, daughter of Margaret Ahrens. Her activities include SADD, peer mentor program, and track. She is a class office and runs a food pantry. Junior David Wilday, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wilday. His activities include golf, bowling, and Boy Scouts. He is also the class representative. Sophomore Cody Burkhart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Burkhart. Freshman Mackenzye Andrews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Andrews, Jr. Eighth-grader Liz Cortese, daughter of Stacy Cortese. Seventh-grader Eliza Cechnicki, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Cechnicki. Her activities include soccer, band, independent chorus, and dance class. She is also the seventh grade class representative. A plaque which contains a group photo of all students of the month will be hung in the school lobby at the end of the school year. Photo submitted - Harry Hoag’s top students - Harry Hoag Elementary School September Students of the Month have been named as follows: Zahary Briggs, kindergarten; Landon Russom, first grade; Phoebe Wagner-Gollinger, second grade; Cheyanne Wahl, third grade; Branden LaMont, fourth grade; Crystal Smith, fifth grade; and Amber Klietgen, sixth grade. A special award also went to Erin Crouse. Students, their family members, and their teachers were treated to breakfast snacks and beverages. Arkell Hall News

CANAJOHARIE — The following news from Arkell Hall is from Oct. 1 through Oct. 11:

Oct. 1 began the month with a weekly Bible Study led by Mary Simpson. On Oct. 2, eight residents participated in an exercise (dancersize) class. Also Oct. 2, a program on Loons (Loony for Loons), in which a collection of loons was brought in and viewed, was led by Linda Klump, activities director. Ladies took an arm-chair trip to Bermuda on Oct. 3. Jeanne DeValve and her sister-in-law, Ann, visited on Friday, Oct. 5 with therapy dogs, explaining details of the “Blessing of the Animals” service that was held on Arkell’s back lawn Saturday, Oct. 6. On Sunday, Oct. 5 five residents enjoyed an outing to the Choralaires and Revisions Barbershop Quartet concert at the Stone Church in Stone Arabia. A trip to Peebles took place Oct. 9 so residents could purchase fall apparel. The weekly church service was led Oct. 10 by Christine Fasset, a guest intern from Little Falls Christ Lutheran Church. Eve Fuelleman and Evelyn Casler visited Arkell Center for the senior card games. To wrap up the week, all residents, six advisory members and two staff members travelled to the Tryon Restaurant in Cherry Valley on a leaf peeping ride.

Arkell Hall recently welcomed two new residents, Norma Clohecy and Frances Kinch, and also welcomed Maguerite Summerson back.

Andrea and David Montayne and pet, Molly, and Al and Judy Austin, were in to see their mom, Ruth Austin. Gail Summerson was in to visit Mrs. Brust. Jay Summerson was in to see his mom. Helen Shults was in to see her mother, Helen Shults. Norma Devost had a visit from Father Murphy. Reva McGowan celebrated her birthday. Nancy Mace joined her for lunch. She also had visits from family. Lynn Countryman was in to visit Blanche Richards. Bonnie Chest and Marcia Brown were in to visit with their mom, Frances Shults. Evelyn Casler went for an outing with her niece. Laura Ciani went out for a walk with Marie and Bernice and invited three friends for a visit of her home and then went out to lunch.

FPCS receives grant from Verizon

FORT PLAIN — The Fort Plain Central School District recently received a $10,000 grant from Verizon that the district plans to use for virtual field trips for students in grades K-12. The district applied for the grant in March.

“This is a big grant for us and we’re very pleased to have it,” said Superintendent Douglas C. Burton. “It’s indicative of the commitment Verizon has to educational programs to the area and of the Board of Education’s commitment to bring quality programs to our students.”

Candidates plan to meet the public

FONDA — Montgomery County Farm Bureau presents a night to meet the candidates and listen as they discuss campaign issues at the Fonda School auditorium. Included in this meeting will be US Senator contenders Kirsten Gillibrand and Wendy Long, NYS Senate contenders George Amedore, Jr. and Cecilia Tkaczyk and Assembly contenders Angelo Santabarbara and Thomas Quackenbush. Congressman Paul Tonko will also be available to address questions. Moderator will be Chris Nellis.

This public event will begin Friday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m.

Charter commission sets public meeting

CANAJOHARIE — Members of the Montgomery County Charter Commission, a group appointed by the Board of Supervisors to draft the proposed charter, will hold a local public meeting at the Town of Canajoharie Hall, 12 Mitchell St., Canajoharie, on Thursday, October 25, at 7 p.m.

Commission members will explain the history of the charter, the process of drafting it, and the problems they sought to address with it. Following the recitation, the members of the commission will take questions from the audience.

A meeting that took place at Amsterdam City Hall on October 17 has been videotaped, and footage of that meeting will be available to view at: http://www.montgomerycountycharter.com/.

Health, wellness expo set Oct. 27

CANAJOHARIE — A Health and Wellness Expo will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Canajoharie High School.

The event, which is a fundraiser for the Canajoharie High School Band’s 2013 trip to perform in Florida, will feature free snacks, free ZUMBA, free boot camp, and information on fitness and nutrition.

Attendees may obtain 10th Annual Turkey Trop applications. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 students, and kids under 3 are free. A family rate of $20 is available for families of three or more.

‘November Stars’ variety show Nov. 2

CANAJOHARIE — For the past thirteen years, the Mohawk Valley Lions Club has had the pleasure of presenting “November Stars,” a variety show for all ages to enjoy. This year’s show will be held Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Arkell Performing Arts Center at the Canajoharie High School.

There will be a special treat again this year. The Canajoharie High School International Club will be preparing and serving a chicken and biscuit supper prior to the show from 5 to 6:30 p.m. All donations for the dinner will go directly to the International Club’s activities.

Proceeds from the Variety Show will fund scholarships for local high school students and will also provide the best possible care for people who depend on your donations for their sight and hearing needs. One hundred percent of all donations fund local, as well as worldwide projects involving Lions’ activities.

Halloween recital at church Oct. 26

CANAJOHARIE — A Halloween Recital will be held at former Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Canajoharie, on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. The one-hour, family friendly recital will feature scary pipe organ music and musical works for All Hallows Eve.

Featured performers include the East Hill Chorus, directed by Sue Crua; Hallows Eve Singers; The Sentimentalists (Mohawk Valley Chorus); Norma Bowley, organ; Caitlin and Jordan Hurd, pianists; The Upper Catskills String Quartet; Mark Hitrick, piano; Naphtali Rothrock, organ; Carol Cechnicki, organ; and Eric M. Stroud, organ.

Attendees are welcomed to dress in costume. Light refreshments will be served. The former Sts. Peter and Paul Church is located at the corner of Cliff St. and Walnut St. Doors will open at 6 p.m. For more information, visit: www.upstatechapel.com.

Autism support group to meet

FORT PLAIN — On Oct. 22, at 6:30 p.m., the Fort Plain Autism/Special Needs Support Group will hold a meeting at the United Methodist Church of Fort Plain, located at 39 Center St. and Lydius.

The workshop will focus on “Papers, Papers Everywhere: Accessing, organizing and Understanding your Child’s Records” with Julie Keegan, special ed resource specialist of Parent Network of Capital Region. Parents, guardians, family members, educators, therapists, students, Pastors and Sunday school, scout leaders, teachers and the community are welcomed to come and learn, discover, support, share, promote and network with professionals and other parents.

Coffee hour with the superintendent

FORT PLAIN — Fort Plain Central School District Superintendent Douglas C. Burton will hold a coffee hour each Tuesday at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the district office throughout the school year.

Fort Plain treats and parade Oct. 31

FORT PLAIN — On Oct. 31, beginning at 5:15 p.m., the Fort Plain Fire Department will host a parade starting at the Legion St. parking lot, marching to the fire house on Canal St.

Also on Oct. 31, the Village of Fort Plain will hold Trick or Treat from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

United Methodist to host harvest fun

FORT PLAIN — The Fort Plain United Methodist Church, located at 39 Center St., will host a Harvest Fun Day Saturday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to noon, which includes make-your-own pumpkins.

Pumpkin face kits will be provided. A coloring contest will take place, with prizes awarded for the two best pictures. Treats, refreshments and goody bags will be available.

Children ages preschool through sixth grade are welcome to attend.

Museum to hold holiday open house

FORT PLAIN — The Fort Plain Museum will hold a Holiday Open House on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m.

The event will feature live Colonial Christmas music by Liaisons Plaisantes, book signings by Joyce Berry and Wayne Lenig, and food and beverages, including wine, coffee, homemade cookies, cheese and more.

You will also have the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts and hear what the museum has planned for the upcoming season.

NAC to host annual haunted house

NELLISTON — The Nelliston Activities Council will host their annual Haunted House on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the old Nelliston school house.

Entrance donation is $2 for adults over 18, while entrance for those 18 and under is $1.

Fall cleanup set for Oct. 19 and 20

ST. JOHNSVILLE — Fall Clean-up is scheduled for Oct. 19 and 20 for town of St. Johnsville residents. This applies to rural residents only, not village residents.

Dumpsters will be available on Friday, Oct. 19 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 20 from 7 a.m. to noon. Dumping will be for household refuse only and will be at the discretion of the monitor.

Appliances and tires will not be accepted. No construction or demolition material will be accepted.
