CANAJOHARIE — Canajoharie High School senior and Community Action Committee President Hanna Wilday found out during the summer that her grandmother had breast cancer. She wanted to do something to help, so she recently made pink ribbons and “spirit finger” gloves and began selling them at football games. So far, she has made about $120 that she plans to donate towards breast cancer research and awareness.

The gloves — which feature tassels (or little pom-poms) at the end of the fingers — sell for $8 and are available in the high school guidance office and at upcoming boy’s basketball games. The pink ribbons sell for $1.

“Even before my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, I wanted to help,” Hanna said. “As soon as we found out, my family and I were with her every day.”

Hanna said she got the idea for spirit finger gloves online. She then went out and bought the ribbons, yarn and wool gloves.

“Every night after dinner, my mother and I would sit down and make the pom-poms and gloves,” she said. “I plan to donate all the money to breast cancer, and we’re not going to take away any of the money we used to buy the yarn or gloves.”

High School Principal David Barnes said school leaders are very proud of Hanna.

“We’re proud of our students and how they put the concerns of others ahead of their own so many times,” he said. “They truly understand what it’s like to help-out others. Breast cancer has been a topic that has affected many kids here and we’ve held many fundraisers for it.”

October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, where organizations and charities look to raise awareness of the disease.
