FORT PLAIN — On Tuesday evening, members of the Friends of Fort Plain were on hand at the Fort Plain Village Office, taking orders for plaques identifying contributing properties in the Historic District.

They will again be available at the Village Office, 168 Canal St., on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon.

For those interested in ordering the 10 by 7 inch signs, there are two shapes available — oval and rectangle. They are bronze, with a black finish, and elevated lettering, each priced at $170. Once an order is placed, the plaques should be received within 4-6 weeks.

“They’re a good way to promote community pride,” said Friend of Fort Plain Beth Marosek.

Those owning the over 500 homes in the Historic District should’ve received a letter from the state recently alerting them of their status. The qualifications for a contributing home — the house must be traditional, and built prior to 1950 — were mapped out by Preservation Consultant Jessie Ravage, of the Preserve NY Program of the Preservation League of NY State.

If you’re unaware of your home’s status regarding the Historic District designation, the Friends of Fort Plain have that information on hand. They also have tax credit information available for owners of contributing properties.

Those interested in making an order, but unable to stop by the Village Office on Saturday morning can contact the Village Office at (518) 993-4271. It was noted that if there is a demand, more time may be offered for Historic District residents to order the plaques, and the FOFP are already making plans to take orders for the signs again this spring.
