FLAT CREEK -- At the Dec. 11 Root Town Council meeting, Assessor Bob Harris reported that he would be mailing out exemption renewals for Basic and Enhanced STAR, and agriculture exemptions.

Harris pointed out that all state residents receiving the Basic Star exemption have to register by Dec. 31. The Enhanced Star exemption renewal form deadline is still March 1, 2014. If town residents are having problems registering, Harris said they could contact him at (518) 673-2208.

Under correspondence, Supervisor John Thayer reported that he received a letter from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department advising the town board that they won't be able to provide court security in 2013 due to budgetary constraints.

Additional correspondence was received from Zoning Board of Appeals Member Paul Toleno, who requested that language be modified in the code to state that the town attorney, town clerk and code enforcement officer “may” not “shall” be required to attend zoning board meetings.

Supervisor Thayer reported that construction on the new salt and sand shed will be complete by Dec. 12.

The town’s end-of-year meeting will be held on Monday, Dec. 30 at 5 p.m. at the town office.

A public hearing was set for Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 at 6:50 p.m., prior to the regular town council meeting, to review the franchise agreement renewal with Time Warner Cable.

There are still vacancies open on the Town Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals. No responses have been received from town residents to date. If any are interested, they are to send a letter of interest/resume to the town clerk, Sherrie Eriksen, Town of Root, 1048 Carlisle Road, Sprakers, NY 12166.
