Ernesta Barletta Marchionne
August 31, 2012


Mrs. Ernesta Barletta Marchionne, 94, formerly of Cemetery Street, Fonda, New York, and Canal St. Fort Plain, NY, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, August 31, 2012.
Ernesta was born on August 27, 1918, in Yosts/Fonda, NY, and was the daughter of Alessandro Barletta and Stella DiProspero Barletta. She was  baptized in Syracuse, NY and her family moved back to Italy in 1922. She returned to the United States after WWII in 1946. Mrs. Marchionne was a mother and homemaker at her home in Fonda, NY, for many years until she moved to Fort Plain to be closer to her daughter. She enjoyed crocheting, cross-stiching, playing Italian card games, and cooking homemade Italian food. Above all she adored her family, and everyone who met her fell in love with her.
Mrs. Marchionne was a communicate of St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church in Fonda, NY, later attending Our Lady of Hope with her     family when she moved to Fort Plain.
In September 1938, Ernesta Barletta married Filippo Marchionne, a marriage that lasted over 50 years until his death on January 31, 1990.
She was preceded in death by her brothers: Archangelo Barletta, Salvatore Barletta, and Dante Carlo Barletta, and sisters: Angelina Barletta De Gregori, and Flora Barletta Mancini. She was also predeceased by a great-grandson, Zack Davis.
Mrs. Marchionne is survived by her daughter, Dr. Rita Marchionne Piñeyro and her husband Dr. Alfonso F. Piñeyro II of Fort Plain, NY; son, Mr. Luigi Marchionne and his wife Olivia Torres Marchionne of Laredo, Texas; brother, Francesco Barletta and a sister, Antonia Barletta Leonoro , both of Sezze, Latina, Italy; grandchildren, Rita Annette Piñeyro and her husband Francis Allen Conover II, of Lee Center, NY, Dr. Alfonso F. Piñeyro III and his wife Annie Armstrong Piñeyro, of Seattle Washington, Filippo Marchionne and his wife Roberta Degiacomo Marchionne of Warwick, RI, Angelica Ernestina Marchionne, and Jolina Maria Davis both of Peachtree City, GA; great-grandchildren, Isabel Minter, Darby Davis, Luciana Marchionne, and Luigi Marchionne. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins both here and in Italy.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Gray-Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339 on Friday September 7th, 2012 from 5:00 to 8:00PM.
A Prayer Service will be held on Saturday September 8th, 2012 at 10:30 am at the funeral home. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339, with a burial following in St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Cemetery in Fonda, NY.

Gladys M. Waner
August 23, 2012


Miss Gladys M. Waner, 99, of Division Street, Fort Plain, New York died, Thursday morning, August 23, 2012 at Palatine Nursing Home.
Born on January 8, 1913 in Ilion, NY, she was the daughter of Alfred Waner and Mabel Neach Waner. She attended Fort Plain High School and Gloversville Business School. She had been a resident of Fort Plain since 1965, previously residing in Ilion, Fonda and Schenectady.
Miss Waner worked at Hawkins Auto Sales in Nelliston, NY as a bookkeeper for 20 years, retiring in June 1985. She had also been employed at Montgomery County Farm Bureau and Chevrolet Garage in Fonda.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fort Plain.
Miss Waner was Past Matron and 65 year member of the Former Mohawk Valley Chapter #489 Order of Eastern Star in Fultonville, currently the St. Monica-Juanita-Mohawk Valley-Cayadutta Chapter #486 Order of Eastern Star. She was also a member and Past President of Dorcas, W.E.L.C.A at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She was a former member of the Pro-To Club in Fonda and was their first Secretary.
Gladys was predeceased by a nephew, Donald Waner on July 29, 2003.
She is survived by her nephew, Richard Waner and his wife Janet of Canajoharie, NY.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Fort Plain Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY 13339.

Kenneth Allan Watkins

Mr. Kenneth Allan Watkins, 84, of State Highway 163, Fort Plain, New York died Monday evening, September 3rd, 2012 surrounded by his family.
Born on February 16, 1928 in the Town of Danube, NY, he was the son of William Kenneth Watkins and Cora Doxtader Watkins. He was a graduate of St. Johnsville Central School, class of 1948 and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Watkins was a supervisor at Helmont Mills Inc. in St. Johnsville, retiring in 1989.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
Mr. Watkins was a Veteran of the US Army, 1st Calvary, Private First Class.
He was a member of the Fort Plain American Legion Post #554, a life member of the First Calvary Division Association, and member of the US Air Forces Association (Colin P. Chapter) in Rome, NY. Mr. Watkins was also a member of the National Rifle Association and the North American Fisherman Club.
Mr. Watkins enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
On October 9, 1954 in Fort Plain, NY, Kenneth was married to Jean Korniat Watkins. Together they celebrated 57 years of marriage.
Mr. Watkins is survived by his wife, Jean Korniat Watkins of Freysbush, NY; two sons, Kenneth Anthony Watkins and his wife, Kerry of Corinth, NY, Terry M. Watkins and his wife, Anne of San Antonio, TX; sister, Jessie Case of St. Johnsville, NY; two  sister-in-laws, Marion Shutter and Ellen Sue Claussen; brother-in-law, Anthony Korniat; three granddaughters, Danielle, Haleigh, Helen; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A prayer service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 9:30am at the Chapel of Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center Street, Fort Plain, NY.
The celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 7 at 10:00am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Reid Street, Fort Plain, NY with Father Dennis Murphy and Father John Roos concelebrating.  
The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 5-8pm at the funeral home.
Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery with Military Honors at graveside.

Geraldine P. VanDerVeer
September 3, 2012


Geraldine P. VanDerVeer, 82, Johnstown, NY, passed away Monday on her birthday, September 3 at the Well’s House in Johnstown where she was a resident for 2 months with her loving family at her bed side. Prior to her stay at Well’s House she was a resident of the Getman Home in Gloversville for four years. Geraldine lived most of her life in Glen. NY.
Born September 3, 1930 in Lindenville, Vermont she was the      daughter of the late Earl and Winifred Rash Davis. She was a graduate of a Vermont High School and she moved to the Glen area in her 20s.
Geraldine was employed as an office manager of the Anderson Instrument Company in Glen retiring many years ago. She was a   member of the Glen Reformed Church and the Eastern Star of Fultonville.
Geraldine enjoyed spending time at her camp in Northampton, NY. She also enjoyed boating and having parties with her friends and     family.
Survivors include two sons, Danny L. VanDerVeer of Fort Hunter and William N. VanDerVeer of Glen; a brother Earl Davis and his wife Helena of New Mexico; three grandchildren, Sean VanDerVeer of Fort Hunter, Katlyn VanDerVeer of Fonda and Rita VanDerVeer of Northville; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was predeceased by her brother Ralph Davis and her sister Lucille Kruger.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 7 PM at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville, NY.
Interment of her cremated remains will take place in Maple Avenue Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home.

Charlotte R. Schlotzhauer
August 25, 2012


Charlotte R. Schlotzhauer, 95, of Woodland Drive, Cobleskill, NY,passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at the St. Johnsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Before moving to Cobleskill seven years ago, Mrs. Schlotzhauer resided for 52 years on Tollgate Road in Canajoharie, NY.
Charlotte was born March 19, 1917 in Hallsville, NY.  The daughter of the late Frederick and Elizabeth Dingman Rubert, she and her     family lived on Barclay Street in Canajoharie after moving from Hallsville. She was a graduate of the Canajoharie High School Class of 1933.
She was first employed at Beechnut Packing Company and later worked as an office clerk at New York Power & Light, both in Canajoharie. With her husband, she was Co-Proprietor of Mohcana Turkey Farm for 12 years.  After raising her children, she worked as the head Housekeeper at the former Montgomery County Infirmary and at the Holiday Inn, both in Amsterdam, NY.  Her last position was with M.W. Roosevelt & Son in Palatine Bridge as a bookkeeper and cashier.
Charlotte led several Brownie and Girl Scout Troops during the 1960’s.
She was a life member and past President of the Canajoharie P.T.A.; former member of the Board of the Canajoharie-Palatine-Root Community Chest; former member and Vice President of the Colonial Club in Canajoharie; and former Trustee, Vice President of the Board, and Trustee Emeritus of the Canajoharie Library & Art Gallery.
She was a member of St. John’s and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Canajoharie and a former Sunday School teacher.
In 1953, she married Frederick H. Schlotzhauer, who passed away in 2001. She was also predeceased by her sisters Grace E. Rubert, Cecile R. Luft, and Emma R. Lipe. Survivors include her loving family, daughters Sandra S. Mullins (Stanley) of Montclair, NJ and Adele F. Schlotzhauer of Chelsea, MA, and grandchildren Angela Neil (Shane) of Brooklyn, NY, and Sean and Scott Mullins of Montclair. She is also survived by several cousins and her adoring nieces and nephew: Cynthia Benenati, Charlene Farrell, Anita Capps, Robert Schlotzhauer, Jr., and Margaret Schlotzhauer.
Charlotte made a gift of her body to Albany Medical College.  A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 13 at the Freysbush United Methodist Church. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.  Memorial contributions may be made in Charlotte’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
Sincere appreciation and thanks are extended to both the staff at Mary Imogene Bassett in Cooperstown and the St. Johnsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center who provided dedicated, compassionate, and loving care in her last month.

Elizabeth M. “Betty” Horwood
August 29, 2012


Mrs. Elizabeth M. “Betty” Horwood ended her earthly journey on August 29, 2012 at the age of 87.   Born on August 4, 1925 she was the daughter of the late Freeman Myron Becker and Cassie Buddle Becker.
A lifelong area resident, Betty was a Canajoharie High School       graduate and a homemaker all of her life.  She was a member of St. John’s-St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and the Montgomery County Home Bureau. Betty will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her two daughters, Kathy (Mark) Wille of Hamilton, NJ and Carol (Michael) Saposnick of Hastings on Hudson, NY; one granddaughter, Lily Elizabeth Saposnick; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold, in 1983.
Services were private and at the convenience of the family.  Interment took place in the Ames Cemetery with the Rev. Nancy Ryan presiding. Those wishing to remember Betty, are asked to make a donation in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 405, Albany, New York 12205 or www.alz.org.

Alta Walker Helmes
August 31, 2012


Alta Helmes, 90, Herkimer, passed away August 31, 2012 with her sister Ruth by her side .
She was born In Salt Springville, the daughter of the late John and Nora Walker.
 She lived in Herkimer.
Survivors include her sister Ruth Keller, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Victor, sisters: Dorthea and Iva, brothers: John, Robert and Kenneth.
