Harry Hoag Elementary has its own presidential election

Thursday, November 08, 2012 - Updated: 9:40 AM

FORT PLAIN — While much of America voted in the presidential election, Harry Hoag Elementary held one of its own on Tuesday.

Members of Jade Van Gorder’s fourth grade class helped build an election booth featuring stories of and the likenesses of the candidates and invited each grade (1-6) to “register” and vote.

Van Gorder estimated that about 300 students registered. Her students helped organize the election and even took turns acting in different roles (think supervisor of elections).

The election project coincides with the fourth grade government curriculum where students learn about the different branches of government. Van Gordon even talked a bit about the presidential and vice presidential candidates.

“It was really cool hearing the conversations among the kids this morning talking about who they were going to vote for and why,” she said.

“The election is basically student-run and the kids seemed to love it. They were excited right from the beginning.”

So, who won?

Obama, 172-107.
