CANAJOHARIE — In front of 18 of their classmates, Canajoharie High School seniors Ben Kane and Alex Renzi recently stood in front of the class and broke down the poem “We Real Cool,” by Gwendolyn Brooks.

“What does the sound and rhythm make you think of?” Alex asked the class. “Who would you think the speaker is?”

Before the class met, the two seniors also assigned homework which they went over in class.

For the past few weeks, English Teacher Misti Yaddaw has supervised as all 20 students in her AP English class took turns learning the material and teaching the other students.

“Each group presents a different chapter of the book, so they have to learn it very well to teach the class,” she said. “They learn the material inside and out, and it’s fun because they get to explain it to each other.”

Alex said teaching the other students is “an easier way to learn” because it requires in-depth research on the topic he’s teaching.

“We’ve been doing this for the past week and it’s been going well,” he said.

Ben agreed.

“You hear the information from a different perspective,” he said. “And everyone presents their lesson in a different way, and that makes it interesting.”
