One in a million
To the editor:
I want to thank the lady that found my credit card near the Rite Aid in Palatine Bridge a few weeks ago.
You are one in a million.
It restored my faith in human nature to find that there are still people like you in this world. You are the best and I “thank you” from the bottom of my heart.
May God bless you and keep you in good health.
Best wishes.

Rules for hunters
To the editor:
Today’s campers are looking for a place to have beer and pot parties. State campgrounds are patrolled constantly, so the state closing free camping along main roads and modernizing back road into areas zoned as wild forest, sends this sort of camper there. The state is restricting hunters and trappers from wild forests by issuing one permit a year.
I have some suggestions for the state:
1. Allow a renewable permit for one year. One year for trappers, espec ...
Working together toward 2013
To the editor:
Hundreds of Fort Plain residents and people from neighboring communities celebrated Last Night 2012 with food, entertainment and song. The many diverse festivities around the community welcomed in the New Year 2013.
It was a wonderful evening and thanks to many are in order including the Fort Plain Central School, The Friends of Fort Plain, The Fort Plain Museum, the Senior Center, the Elks, the VFW, the Reformed Church, the Fort Plain Free Lib ...
Thanks to Fort Plain Post 2000
To the editor:
My name is Stephen Boos and am the president of Holly Expert Tree Care Service Inc. of Staten Island. We are a small tree service of five to seven employees that maintains trees, shrubs and sells firewood.
As you know, on Oct. 29, Hurricane Sandy devastated the New York and New Jersey metropolitan areas, with Staten Island being among hardest hit. Thousands of people lost their homes and businesses, many lost their lives.
In my wildest dream ...
Helping us help others
To the editor:
Once again, the officers and members of Catholic Daughters Court Catherine Esther #1264 would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to those who contributed items and money to the Christmas Collection for our Servicemen and women in Afghanistan.
We’d also like to thank the Fort Plain, Canajoharie and St. Johnsville branches of the NBT Bank, Our Lady of Hope Church in Fort Plain and the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Canajoharie for their coo ...
Nostalgia and hope
To the editor:
After reading this week’s (well, last week’s, I suppose, as I am a mail subscriber) C-S-E, I just wanted to drop you a note and tell you that after so many years being gone from Canajoharie, what a great pleasure it is every week to see what is going on in my home town and how proud I am to be able to say hey, this is where I grew up.
First, in politics: Although he was not successful, I am so pleased that Tom Quackenbush gained the notoriety and re ...
Recognizing SRPs
To the editor:
Tuesday, November 20th, is School-Related Professionals Recognition day in
New York State. The third Tuesday in November is the day designated by the state Legislature as a special statewide recognition day for School-Related Professionals. SRPs work long and hard each day as partners in education with other school staff on both the front lines and behind the scenes.
SRPs help to educate our children and keep them healthy. SRPs safely transport children to and f ...
Hometown candidates
To the editor:
Driving around lately it’s hard to miss that there’s an election coming up. Though this time around things are a little different — rather than looking at two unfamiliar names, we see lawn after lawn prominently displaying signs for the hometown candidate, our own Tom Quackenbush.
The neatly set out signs on well-cared-for lawns speak to the pride with which “upcounty” is putting its best foot forward. People are getting behind Su ...
Testimonial to a friend
To the editor:
I take this opportunity to write a testimonial to a friend. The reader may rest assured that if that friend did not deserve this honor it would not be put forward.
That friend is Sally Rappa who had been a long time employee of Canajoharie Library and Art Gallery. This writer has been on the board of trustees there for many years. During those years I have watched Sally go the extra mile to make the visits of people from near and far more productive and pl ...
Setting the record straight
To the editor:
It’s time to set the record straight. Unfortunately, my opponent, State Assembly candidate Tom Quackenbush, has been telling flat-out lies about my record, while “ducking” his own.
Recently, Mr. Quackenbush sent out yet another misleading campaign mailer. This one insinuated that I voted to exceed the governor’s property tax cap. That’s a lie. The truth is, I voted against an override of the cap because I know our familie ...
In support of the charter
To the editor:
I urge all voters in Montgomery County to support the upcoming ballot on a new County Charter. As a member of the Charter Commission, I participated in the development of a plan that set the overall view of local government while working through the associated details. I have listened to concerns of the public and the Supervisors and offer a few brief points.
Our county budget is approaching $100m/year — I view that as a major business provi ...
New charter good for county
To the editor,
It’s that time of year again: election time. This year the voters in Montgomery County will make history by voting yes or no for a New Charter form of County Government. I am asking all members of the voting public to take the time and educate themselves on the New Charter. Over the past 30 years the County Board of Supervisors has looked at this topic at least four times formally and talked about it forever.
The public can review the Charter by ...
Is a charter the answer?
To the editor:
The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors decided that Montgomery County requires a new form of government — a charter. To this end, the Board of Supervisors appointed a commission to create this charter. The commission chairman, FMCC President Dustin Swanger, Ed.D, believes that this commission created a new commendable form of county government with which you, the taxpayer, should acquaint yourself. He is also confident you will find this charter ...
The American flag at the fair
To the editor:
As an American, a veteran, and a citizen, I was appalled during some of the activities at the Fonda Fair recently. Between people being disrespectful to others, themselves, and most of all disrespecting the largest symbol of our freedom in our nation. I was unsure of what to think. I still am. I have been away from this area for almost 20 years and maybe I have insight few others do.
When our national anthem was sung, most people did stand, however, ...
Riding to give back
To the editor:
On behalf on the Snell family and the Justin’s Ride Committee, we would like to thank everyone that came out to make the 3rd Annual Justin’s Ride, a huge success.
This year’s ride was about 105 miles, around the Great Sacandaga Lake, and drew approximately 200 motorcyclists and sold over 300 dinners.
For those of you not familiar with Justin’s Ride, it is a memorial ride, in memory of our son and brother, Justin Snell, who was tragica ...
In support of Santabarbara
To the editor:
I am writing in support of Angelo Santabarbara’s candidacy for the NYS Assembly. I have been a constituent of Angelo’s for about five years and have been impressed by his record. He understands and constantly talks about one of the biggest issues for most families: the need to lower taxes. He also understands that the residents of the community need services. He is not out there calling for the elimination of taxes at the expense of eliminat ...
Bringing them back together
To the editor:
I would like to thank the St. Johnsville Alumni Association Committee.
Thank you so much for the wonderful evening I had on Saturday, August 4, 2012. My 50th class reunion was truly an enjoyable evening thanks to the hard work and dedication of the committee. The long hours of preparation and all the phone calls were very much appreciated. The honoring of the Armed Forces was a classy act and very well done.
Thanks to the committee, I saw classmates th ...
Toward a common goal
To the editor:
It was with great surprise that I read the article in last week’s Courier covering the August 7th meeting of Canajoharieπs Village Board titled “Village takes temporary ownership of West Hill.”
No one from Historic Fort Plain (HFP) was able to attend the meeting and we were not contacted in regard to the piece so we were caught largely unaware of what transpired at the board meeting in our absence. So, as the newspaper circulated l ...
A gorgeous asset
To the editor:
Canajoharie Gorge is a site of great natural beauty. The village has always recognized that beauty as an asset and developed Wintergreen Park and the nature trail that winds along the gorge to an overlook platform high above the falls.
People cause the danger in the gorge. People do unlawful things, people do stupid things, people do careless things and all too frequently they involve alcohol.
Mr. Canfield wrote “Since the last time I looked, Canajoharie ...
The cows came home
To the editor:
I am writing this letter to say “thank you” for something which I feel is special in St. Johnsville. I refer to the remarkable “Painted Cow” images placed around the community. Three cheers to whoever devised the unique project and those who made it come to life. I and many others have a more pleasant day because they are round about us.

Honoring Coach Kornas
To the editor:
The eighth annual Joe Kornas Memorial Golf Tournament was recently held at the Canajoharie Country Club. A total of 76 golfers gathered to remember and honor a man who taught Physical Education and Health in the Canajoharie School district, as well as coaching many teams to successful seasons.
Every June, a graduating student is given a monetary gift in memory of Coach Kornas. This year’s winner was Bill Winsman.
We’d like to thank all who parti ...
Patronage and participation
To the editor:
The Fort Plain Annual 4th on the 3rd celebration has experienced many of Mother Nature’s storms, from the flood of 2006 to the customary three hours of rain during the event.
This year was a “perfect storm” of a different type.
All the conditions were perfect for a spectacular celebration. The weather was comfortable, the grounds were dry, the financial contributions set all time records and thousands of people turned out for ...
Great Americans
Dear Editor:
Thank you to friends, neighbors, teachers and coaches for their financial aid, to help send our young athletes to the 2012 Summer Olympics in England.
You are all great supporters of our youths and great Americans.

If you want something done ...
To the editor:
A good friend once said to me, “If you want something done, ask a busy person.” Well, as I’m a world class procrastinator, I’ve lately had to rely on those I know are already busy with other things in order to get my job done. I’ve neglected the fledgling community garden and then I’ve relied on others to help to get it in the ground.
What I’ve learned through this process is that Fort Plain and Canaj ...
Remembrance appreciated
To the Editor:
On behalf of our membership, I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful show of support this past Memorial Day. Our parade saw an outstanding turnout of veterans and how grateful and richly blessed we are to still have so many representatives of St. Johnsville’s Greatest Generation.
I would particularly like to thank the following individuals who worked so hard to make our parade and attendant service so meaningful: Tim Rice, Alan (Charlie) ...
Thanks for the support
To the editor:
The board of trustees and staff of the Margaret Reaney Memorial Library would like to thank everyone for their show of support with the recent funding ballot. In 2010 the library celebrated 100 years of service and as we move forward we will do our best to justify your continued confidence in us.
