Kansas City, MO – After a highly publicized holdout, defensive tackle Chris Jones has finally put pen to paper, signing a revised one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. The new deal, worth $19.5 million, maintains the same base value as before but introduces enticing incentives that could see the contract’s value soar to $25.17 million.
Under the revised terms, Jones can earn an additional $2 million through playing time incentives and an extra $1.75 million if he manages to record an impressive 15 sacks. The deal also includes bonuses of $1 million for a first-team All-Pro honor and an extra $2 million for winning the Defensive Player of the Year award. Furthermore, a Super Bowl victory would also grant Jones an added financial reward.
While the Chiefs retain the option of franchise tagging Jones at the end of the season, the move would come at a significant cost of approximately $32.4 million. However, it is worth noting that no new years have been added to Jones’ contract, implying that he remains only committed to the team until 2023.
Unfortunately for Jones, his holdout resulted in hefty fines amounting to over $2 million and forced him to miss out on a crucial $1.1 million game check in the Chiefs’ season-opening loss. Nonetheless, the star defensive tackle aimed to bridge the gap between his annual compensation and that of Aaron Donald, widely regarded as the highest-paid defensive tackle in the league. With this new agreement, Jones has successfully achieved his goal of securing the second-highest compensation in the defensive tackle market.
Despite signing this revised one-year deal, negotiations for a long-term contract are yet to be finalized. Therefore, unless the new agreement includes a provision to prevent the franchise tag, Jones may still become a free agent in March next year.
General Manager Brett Veach acknowledged the importance of Jones’ contributions to the Chiefs’ success, particularly emphasizing his impressive 15.5 sacks during the previous season. Jones’ performance on the field has played a pivotal role in the team’s accomplishments, further solidifying his value and significance within the franchise.
With Jones’ holdout finally resolved, Chiefs fans can now breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that the talented defensive tackle will be on the field, ready to contribute to the team’s ongoing pursuit of success in the upcoming matches.
