NASA and SpaceX have joined forces to develop the Starship Human Landing System (HLS) for future lunar missions. As part of this collaboration, the Starship HLS will be equipped with two variants of SpaceX’s powerful Raptor engines.
To ensure optimal performance, one variant of the Raptor engine is specifically designed for operation in atmospheric pressure at sea-level, while the other is optimized for operation in the vacuum of space. To test the engines under extreme conditions, SpaceX recently conducted successful engine tests, including a startup test of the vacuum-optimized Raptor engine in cold conditions.
These tests are of great significance for the upcoming Artemis missions. One of the unique challenges of the Artemis missions is that the landers may need to sit in space without firing for extended periods, resulting in extremely low temperatures. In November 2021, SpaceX achieved a major milestone by completing a successful engine test that demonstrated the Raptor’s capability to perform a critical phase of landing on the Moon.
