Typhoon Haikui Causes Temporary Shutdown in Southern Taiwan
In the early hours of Monday, Typhoon Haikui made landfall in Taitung County, southern Taiwan, bringing with it intense winds reaching 96 mph and gusts up to 120 mph. As a result, work, transport, and classes were temporarily halted across the region. The storm caused some damage, including uprooted trees, a collapsed guesthouse, and flooding in low-lying areas. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or serious damage.
Authorities took swift action in response to the typhoon, with nearly 4,000 people being evacuated from high-risk mountain communities. Power outages affected approximately 75,000 homes in Taitung and Hualien counties.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, several events had to be canceled, including a hot air balloon festival, concerts, and a baseball game. These cancellations disappointed many who were looking forward to attending these events, but public safety remained the top priority.
Following its passage through Taiwan, Typhoon Haikui is expected to head towards China. In preparation, the city of Shantou has advised residents to take necessary precautions. It is important for the public to stay informed about the storm’s progress and to follow any instructions issued by local authorities.
China has already been grappling with another typhoon, Typhoon Saola, which has caused widespread disruption along the coastal regions. The storm forced the evacuation of 900,000 people and resulted in 80,000 fishing vessels being brought back to shore. In Hong Kong, most businesses, transport services, and schools have been suspended in response to the typhoon.
Despite the storms, both China and Taiwan have continued their military operations. China’s military has remained active near Taiwan, while Taiwan’s Defense Ministry closely monitored the movements of Chinese military aircraft and navy ships in the region.
As these two powerful typhoons continue to wreak havoc in the region, it is crucial for residents to prioritize their safety and heed the advice of local authorities. Stay tuned for further updates on the progression of the storms.
