Virginia Department of Health Reports State’s First Pediatric Flu-Related Death for 2023 Flu Season
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has made a grim announcement concerning the state’s first influenza-associated pediatric death for the ongoing 2023 flu season. According to the VDH, a child aged between five and 12, hailing from Virginia’s Eastern region, succumbed to complications associated with the flu virus.
Respecting the family’s privacy, the VDH has stated that no further details about the child will be released. Dr. Karen Shelton, the State Health Commissioner, offered her condolences to the grieving family and urged eligible individuals to get vaccinated against the flu to safeguard both themselves and others.
To prevent or minimize the flu’s impact, the VDH recommends three main actions: receiving an annual flu vaccine, practicing good preventive measures, and seeking early healthcare attention if feeling unwell. Notably, emergency department and urgent care visits due to flu-like illnesses were significantly higher during the week ending December 23, particularly among young children and school-aged children.
The latest tragic incident serves as a reminder of the seriousness of the flu and the importance of vaccination. During the previous flu season, Virginia recorded five influenza-associated pediatric deaths. However, worryingly, only 27% of eligible Virginians have reported receiving the flu vaccine this season.
Vaccines are available and have proven effective in guarding against severe flu-related health complications. The VDH provides resources to help individuals locate a seasonal flu vaccine conveniently close to them. Additionally, for current updates and further information on respiratory diseases in Virginia, interested parties can access the VDH Respiratory Diseases website.
As the flu season progresses, health authorities continue to emphasize the critical role vaccinations play in protecting public health. Awareness campaigns and initiatives are crucial to combatting the flu and preventing its detrimental impact on society.
