NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Texas is gearing up to receive and analyze samples from the asteroid Bennu, making them the first scientists to handle these extraterrestrial materials. The samples, currently aboard the OSIRIS-REx space probe, are set to reach Earth in late September and will be brought to the Johnson Space Center in Houston for in-depth analysis.
The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft was launched in 2016 with the specific mission of collecting samples from Bennu. Upon arrival, the probe successfully made contact with the asteroid in October 2020, despite facing complications with the collection compartment valve. Even so, it managed to capture a significant amount of dust and rock from the asteroid’s surface.
Now, scientists at the Johnson Space Center will carefully separate pieces of the rock and dust for immediate study, while preserving the remainder for future generations. Their goal is to gain a better understanding of the precursors that may have contributed to the development of life in our solar system and on Earth.
The spacecraft is scheduled to land in the Utah desert on September 24, carrying an estimated 8.8 ounces of material from Bennu. This sample holds immense potential for scientific breakthroughs, as previous samples brought to Earth by Japanese probes in 2010 and 2020 contained uracil, a building block of RNA.
By studying the samples from Bennu, scientists hope to determine the validity of theories suggesting that life on Earth was seeded from outer space. Additionally, these samples may offer valuable insights into the ingredients that brought life to our planet and help interpret observations made on other celestial bodies.
